Chapter 1 - the empty chair

The dining room inside the sprawling Hale estate was colossal, bathed in the brilliant glow of crystal chandeliers reflecting off polished marble floors. At the far end of an immaculate, thirty-foot mahogany dining table sat Julian Hale. At thirty-six, Julian was a wealthy and deeply feared Mafia boss—tall, broad-shouldered, strikingly handsome, and commanding without effort. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, an open-collar black dress shirt, a luxury wristwatch, and polished black leather shoes, he sat completely alone, cutting his dinner with deliberate, guarded precision. Near the heavy arched doorway stood his chief bodyguard, a tall, disciplined, and intimidating man in a dark tailored suit with an earpiece, watching the hall with relentless vigilance.

The silence of the room was broken by the soft pitter-patter of tiny shoes.

Three-year-old Amara Bennett quietly wandered into the grand room. Small, innocent, and deeply perceptive, she wore a beautiful teal dress with a matching teal bow pinned into her curly brown hair. She stopped at the edge of the long carpet, her big brown eyes scanning the row of empty velvet chairs surrounding the table. Without an ounce of fear, she walked directly up to the side of Julian's chair, resting her tiny hand on the polished mahogany edge.

"Mister… may I eat with you?" Amara asked, her sweet voice echoing softly through the vast room.

Before Julian could answer, the door swung open. Grace Bennett rushed into the room, breathless and terrified. At thirty-one, Grace was Julian's housekeeper—naturally beautiful, gentle, and hardworking in her neat black-and-white maid uniform with her soft brown hair tied back. She dropped to her knees, grabbing Amara's small hand while looking up at Julian with wide, panicked eyes.

"I am so sorry, Mr. Hale!" Grace stammered, pulling Amara back. "She slipped out of the staff quarters while I was folding laundry. We are leaving right now."

Amara looked confused, pointing her tiny finger toward Julian sitting at the head of the table. "But he’s eating alone, Mommy."

The guards at the doorway shifted uncomfortably, waiting for Julian's usual cold dismissal. Julian studied the little girl in the teal dress for a long, quiet moment. Then, with slow, deliberate grace, he reached out and pulled out the heavy velvet chair right beside his own.

Grace and the guards froze in absolute shock.

"Bring her a plate," Julian commanded calmly, his deep voice carrying an effortless authority.

Minutes later, Amara was happily perched on the chair, clutching a warm dinner roll in her small hands. Julian turned his head slightly, quietly watching her eat with a rare, unreadable expression.

Amara took a small bite, looked up at Julian, and spoke with complete innocence. "My mommy said you used to have a little girl too."

Standing near the sideboard, Grace's face instantly lost all color. Her breath hitched in her throat, her hands trembling against her white apron.

Julian slowly turned his head away from Amara and fixed his dark, piercing eyes directly onto Grace. Amara leaned a little closer to Julian, resting her tiny elbows on the marble table.

"Mommy has a picture of her hidden in our room," Amara whispered softly.

Julian froze.
