Chapter 4 - the shadows at the gate

By midnight, the heavy rain had started to fall over the estate grounds, drumming loudly against the high arched windows of the master study.
Dr. Evans, a trusted private physician bound by strict non-disclosure contracts, pulled a cotton swab from a sterile container. Gently, he took a sample from inside little Amara’s mouth while she sat quietly on Julian’s lap, happily playing with the luxury wristwatch Julian had unclasped from his wrist to keep her entertained.
Grace sat in a leather armchair nearby, wrapping her hands tightly around a mug of warm tea, her eyes fixed on the physician.
"The expedited PCR analysis will take approximately three hours, Mr. Hale," Dr. Evans announced, placing the sample into a portable digital analyzer on the desk. "We will have definitive results before dawn."
"Thank you, Doctor," Julian said, his broad hand gently resting on Amara's back as the little girl leaned against his black dress shirt, growing sleepy.
Suddenly, a red indicator light flashed on the security panel mounted beside the mahogany desk. Vance tapped his earpiece, his disciplined face instantly hardening into a mask of sharp alert.
"Boss," Vance reported quietly, stepping toward the desk. "Perimeter camera four just picked up two blacked-out SUVs idling on the outer access road near the forest line. Thermal sensors show four armed individuals monitoring the estate gates."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. "Who owns the vehicles?"
"Unmarked tags," Vance replied. "But the chassis design matches the private security fleet of Sterling Enterprises."
Grace gasped, setting her tea cup down with a sharp clatter. "Sterling? Victor Sterling?"
Julian looked sharply at Grace. "You know that name?"
"Three years ago... before the hospital fire," Grace stammered, her face turning pale again. "A man named Victor Sterling came to the hospital private suite. He was arguing with the head surgeon about your daughter's medical records. He was the one who paid for the private security detail in the maternity wing that night!"
Julian stood up slowly, holding sleeping Amara securely against his broad chest. His mind raced with terrifying clarity. Victor Sterling was his own trusted underboss—the man who had stood beside him at his daughter's memorial three years ago, pretending to mourn while covertly orchestrating the abduction.
"Vance," Julian ordered flatly, his deep voice laced with lethal authority. "Lock down the estate perimeter. Raise the blast shutters. Move Grace and Amara to the reinforced master penthouse on the top floor."
"Right away, sir," Vance nodded, pulling his sidearm and stepping into the corridor.

Before Vance could reach the door, a sudden high-pitched chime echoed from the digital DNA analyzer on the desk.
Dr. Evans looked at the screen, his mouth falling open in utter astonishment. "Mr. Hale... the results are in."
