Chapter 15 - Helena’s version of responsibility

Helena finally gave a full statement in a civil deposition.

She did not deny Nightstar.

She called it:

“A membership extension of Aurum’s concierge service.”

Did clients authorize?

“Some contracts were broader than others.”

True.

Did lenders authorize commercial rentals?

“I viewed them as private experiences, not rentals.”

Customers drove cars alone after paying money.

Labels only stretch so far.

Then insurance.

Why omit paid use from Mercedes claim?

“I did not know exactly when the scratch happened.”

Customer had texted a photograph.

She said:

“I believed there may have been prior damage.”

Possible.

Then Bentley.

Why claim damage after demonstration drive when Leo caused it?

“I misunderstood the timing.”

Garage video showed otherwise.

Then Leo.

Her voice changed.

“I never abused him.”

“You denied dinner?”

“I delayed dinner until he completed chores.”

“Three documented evenings?”

“He ate later.”

One night he did.

Two he did not until morning? Household records showed one was given sandwich by nanny at 9:20, another kitchen closed but he had snack earlier, another no dinner until breakfast. Need keep exact. The records established:

Night one: dinner delayed to 9:15, then eaten.

Night two: nanny gave sandwich at 9:20 despite Helena saying no.

Night three: no evening meal after afternoon snack; breakfast next morning.

So not "three missed dinners" fully. Good.

Then:

“He was never starving.”

No.

That did not make using food as leverage acceptable.

Then debt ledger.

“Behavior tool.”

Why dollars?

“He understands money.”

At six?

“He understands consequences.”

Then Aston scratch.

Did she know Nightstar customer reported it?

“Yes.”

Why charge Leo?

“I wanted him to take garage rules seriously because he had been around the car.”

There.

Not even a claim he caused it.

She charged him because he was around it.

Then one question:

“Did you intend to tell Carmine the boy caused the damage?”

Helena paused.

“If Carmine asked, I would have explained.”

Messages contradicted:

Household child damage is plausible.

Carmine will cover if necessary.

Her lawyer objected to characterizations.

Still.

Then she said something that almost made me understand her.

“Carmine lives in a world where every problem disappears because someone else absorbs it. I was trying to teach Leo that actions cost money.”

There was truth buried inside arrogance.

I had money.

I often paid problems away.

Leo should learn responsibility.

But responsibility is:

You scratched a car, so no scooter in garage and you apologize.

Not:

You owe thousands, wash commercial vehicles, accept blame for strangers, and lose dinner.

She had taken a reasonable lesson and turned it into a control system useful to her business.

That was why she remained dangerous even without shouting.

She could always find one defensible sentence inside a larger wrong.
