Chapter 16 - The charges separate

The prosecutor did not combine everything into one giant indictment.

Helena faced separate theories.

Child-related:

A misdemeanor/felony-level child-endangerment count under applicable law based on repeated coercive labor, food withholding, and inappropriate punishment.

A narrower neglect-related count tied to food deprivation.

No forced-labor trafficking charge.

No slavery language.

No dramatic kidnapping count.

Insurance-related:

Two counts alleging knowingly false material statements/claims.

One tied to Mercedes.

One tied to Bentley.

Attempted fraud theory regarding Aston remained under review because no claim had yet been submitted.

Vehicle-related:

Prosecutors considered unauthorized use/conversion counts for client cars.

Consent ambiguity weakened criminal proof on several vehicles.

They ultimately charged one count involving Richard Coletti’s Bentley, where contract language and communications were strongest.

Another owner pursued civilly.

Document/business counts:

No tax charge then.

No bank-fraud charge.

Lender issues remained civil.

Then Cody Lane.

Operations manager.

He cooperated.

Did he know Nightstar used restricted cars?

“Yes.”

Did he know clients lacked consent?

“Sometimes I suspected.”

Did he know Leo was being blamed?

He saw ledger once.

Told Helena:

“This is getting weird.”

Did he stop?

No.

Did he profit?

Salary plus small Nightstar bonuses totaling:

$9,600.

Prosecutors offered immunity for truthful testimony on certain conduct after determining his role secondary.

Not heroism.

Self-preservation.

Then Helena surrendered through counsel.

No police cars at mansion.

No bodyguards.

Released on conditions.

No contact with Leo.

No destruction of business records.

No unauthorized transfer of disputed vehicles.

Aurum allowed to operate under court/business agreements but could not use client cars outside written consent.

Then my name.

News headline:

Reputed mob figure’s fiancée charged in luxury-car scheme

Predictable.

My legitimate companies’ banks asked questions.

Did Nightstar money touch my businesses?

Forensic review:

No.

Did Aurum use my garage?

Yes.

Did I receive revenue?

No.

Was there evidence I knew of rentals?

No.

Still, one lender requested enhanced compliance certification because reputation creates cost even without guilt.

I complied.
