Chapter 7 - Leo’s real debt

The child advocacy center interviewed Leo.

Interviewer:

Danielle Brooks.

No leading.

No repeated:

Did Helena do this?

Instead:

“Tell me about cleaning cars.”

Leo started with the blue Bentley.

“I hit it.”

“What happened after?”

“Helena said two thousand.”

“What does two thousand mean?”

“Money.”

“Do you have two thousand dollars?”

“No.”

“What did Helena say?”

“Work it off.”

“How?”

“Wash.”

“How many cars?”

He counted on his fingers.

Lost track.

Then:

“What happens if a car comes back scratched?”

“She says maybe I touched it.”

“Did you?”

“Sometimes no.”

“Does she say you did?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I’m in garage.”

Then the food.

“What happens if you don’t clean?”

“No dinner.”

“Does that happen every time?”

“No.”

“How many times did you miss dinner?”

Leo said:

“Four.”

Could be three.

Could be five.

Household records later confirmed Helena told kitchen staff Leo had “already eaten” on three evenings when he had not.

A fourth evening, the nanny gave him a sandwich after finding him hungry.

No long-term nutritional injury.

Still deliberate deprivation.

Then:

“Did Helena tell you not to tell your dad?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“He’ll pay and be mad.”

“At you?”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

“He’ll make all the cars go away and people lose jobs.”

That sounded like adult business fear repackaged for a child.

Then the late-night return.

“Did you see cars leave?”

“Yes.”

“Who drives?”

“People.”

“Do you know them?”

“No.”

“What does Helena say?”

“Rich people borrow.”

Borrow.

Then:

“One man brought red car back and said sorry.”

“What happened?”

“He gave Helena keys. Wheel broken.”

“Then?”

“She saw me.”

“And?”

“She said I was awake when I shouldn’t be.”

There.

Not:

You broke it.

At first.

Then next morning:

“She said maybe I touched it before.”

Leo said no.

Helena added debt anyway.

Then interviewer asked:

“What do you think debt means?”

Leo answered:

“Something you have to finish before people are nice again.”

I read that sentence in the report.

Then stopped reading for almost a minute.

Money was fixable.

May you like

Cars were fixable.

A six-year-old believing kindness resumed only after repayment was a different kind of damage.
