Chapter 3

The three simple words hovered in the warm afternoon air, carrying a weight that seemed to freeze the entire courtyard in place.

Colonel Richard Vale stared down at the thin, barefoot boy in the torn gray shirt. The mocking smirk that had painted his handsome face seconds ago flickered and completely vanished. His commanding blue eyes, hardened by decades of military discipline, searched Noah's face for any sign of fear, trickery, or hesitation. He found none. The child’s eyes were clear, bright, and filled with a serene, absolute conviction that defied human understanding.

Claire stood motionless beside her husband, her hand slowly slipping from his sleeve. She stared at Noah, her maternal instincts sensing something extraordinary, something divine, radiating from the impoverished street child.

nearby general leaned in, whispering harshly, "Richard, call security. Have this beggar removed before he causes a scene."

Richard raised his hand, silencing the general without looking back. For the first time in his life, the powerful Army colonel felt a strange, inexplicable tremor of hesitation deep within his chest. A voice deep inside his soul—a voice he had buried under years of grief and cynical logic—whispered that he was standing on the threshold of something beyond the physical world.

Richard took a slow, heavy breath, his black dress uniform taut over his broad shoulders. He looked at his son, then at his daughter, seeing the faint spark of fragile hope blossoming in their bright blue eyes.

"Go ahead," Richard said, his deep baritone voice restrained, quiet, and laced with a sudden, cautious gravity.

Noah offered a small, serene smile. Without a moment's delay, the barefoot boy slowly sank onto his knees, settling directly onto the hard, sunlit stones of the courtyard between Leo and Lila. His ragged, patched trousers bunched around his knees, his calloused bare feet tucked beneath him.

The twins looked down at him in wide-eyed wonder. Leo shifted his wooden crutches slightly to give the boy space, while Lila held her breath, her small hands trembling against her crutch handles.

Noah reached out his hands. His small, thin fingers were calloused and light, yet they moved with fluid, gentle grace. He placed his left hand flat against the heavy black orthopedic brace covering Leo’s right knee, and his right hand flat against the matching steel brace spanning Lila’s left knee.

The moment his skin made contact with the cold black metal and leather, Noah slowly closed his eyes.

A profound, unnatural stillness descended over the entire estate. The wind seemed to die down, the rustling leaves fell silent, and the golden sunlight seemed to concentrate directly upon the three children sitting in the center of the courtyard.

For five long seconds, nothing happened. Several officers shifted uncomfortably, preparing to scoff.

Suddenly, Lila let out a sharp, audible gasp. Her large blue eyes expanded in sheer, unadulterated shock. She looked down at her leg, her lips parting as a sudden wave of intense, pleasant warmth surged beneath the thick black leather straps.

"Daddy..." Lila whispered, her little voice trembling violently with shock and wonder. "...I can feel his hand!"
