Chapter 4

The entire courtyard erupted into a wave of suppressed gasps and frantic whispers.

Colonel Richard Vale’s heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. His cold, stoic composure collapsed entirely as he instinctively dropped onto one knee beside his daughter. The polished black leather of his formal shoes hit the stone, his gold medals clinking softly against his chest.

"Lila... are you sure?" Richard asked, his deep voice shaken, urgent, and thick with an emotion he had not felt in years.

"Yes! Yes, Daddy!" Lila cried, tears spilling over her rosy cheeks as she stared down at her braced leg. "It... it feels hot! Like sunshine inside my knee! I can feel my toes!"

Beside her, Leo’s wooden crutches suddenly wobbled. The young boy let out a breathless gasp, his face flushing crimson as he looked down at his own right leg. He felt an intense, tingling sensation—like thousands of microscopic needles sparking to life—rushing down his withered thighs, through his dead nerve pathways, and directly into his feet.

Noah remained completely motionless. His eyes were firmly shut, his young face peaceful and unburdened, as if he were merely a conduit for an infinite, invisible light passing through his small body.

Suddenly, a loud, distinct CLICK echoed from the heavy black orthopedic braces.

The surrounding generals and military officers stared in absolute, paralyzing disbelief. Before their very eyes, the rigid steel hinges and tight leather straps binding Leo’s and Lila’s legs began to loosen as if unlocked by an invisible key.

Leo's right foot made a distinct, deliberate movement inside his polished black shoe, shifting firmly against the stone pavement.

"Colonel... look at Leo," Noah whispered softly, slowly opening his clear brown eyes.

Richard turned his head sharply toward his son. He watched, completely speechless, as Leo slowly let go of his wooden crutches. The two polished crutches clattered noisily onto the stone floorboards.

Leo did not fall.

Supported by invisible strength returning to his rejuvenated muscles, the seven-year-old boy stood upright on his own two feet. His black orthopedic braces slipped entirely down his legs, falling harmlessly to the ground in a heap of useless metal and leather.

"Daddy! Look at me!" Leo shouted, his voice filled with radiant, miraculous joy as he took a solid, confident step forward on the courtyard stones.

Beside him, Lila let out a joyful squeal. She tossed her wooden crutches aside, watching in utter ecstasy as her black leg braces unlatched and fell away from her mint-green floral dress. She took one step, then two, her cream Mary Jane shoes striking the marble with solid, perfect balance.

Claire fell to her knees on the stone floor, covering her face with her hands, sobbing uncontrollably in pure, overwhelming gratitude as she watched her paralyzed children walking, balancing, and taking steps completely unassisted.
