Chapter 11 - the power shift

"Mr. Carter," the building intercom crackled to life. It was the head of building security, his voice strained. "Judge Drake is in the lobby with an emergency protective custody order issued by the county court. He has warrants authorizing the immediate removal of the minor child, Lucy Miller, into state foster custody."

Daniel’s expression turned to pure stone. Drake was moving fast. He knew Keller had failed on the roof, so he was using his judicial power to legally seize Lucy before the banks opened in the morning. Once Lucy was in the state system under Drake’s jurisdiction, she would vanish into an anonymous foster facility—or worse.

Sarah began to hyperventilate. "They're going to take her, Daniel. A judge can take her."

"Not tonight," Daniel said coldly.

He walked to his desk, grabbed his private satellite phone, and dialed a number he hadn't called in five years: Marcus Hayes, the Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s financial crimes division—and Daniel’s college roommate.

"Marcus," Daniel said into the receiver, his voice razor-sharp. "I have the physical ledger location and signed confessions regarding the forty-million-dollar maritime fraud case from eleven years ago. The perpetrators are Judge Thomas Drake and Victoria Drake. Drake is currently downstairs abusing his judicial authority to abduct a key federal witness."

A pause on the other end. Then Marcus’s heavy voice: "How fast do you need us, Dan?"

"Ten minutes. And bring federal marshals."

Daniel hung up. He looked at Ethan. "Ethan, take Lucy into the panic room behind my closet. Lock the vault from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except my voice."

"I've got her, Dad," Ethan said with a maturity beyond his twelve years. He took Lucy's hand. "Come on, Lucy. We're safe in there."

Daniel turned to Sarah. "Stay with them. Keep the lights low."

Once the heavy steel door of the master bedroom closet clicked shut, Daniel adjusted his black tie, straightened the lapels of his suit, and pressed the elevator button to summon Judge Drake up to the penthouse.

The elevator doors opened three minutes later.

Judge Thomas Drake stepped into the penthouse foyer. He was seventy years old, with silver hair, an impeccably tailored pinstripe suit, and a face carved from cold arrogance. Two uniformed city police officers stood behind him, looking distinctly uncomfortable.

"Daniel," Drake said smoothly, holding up a manila folder. "I apologize for the late hour. But Victoria informed me that a mentally unstable woman and an undocumented child have trespassed into your residence. As an officer of the court, I cannot allow my future son-in-law to be exposed to extortion."

Daniel stood in the center of the vast living room, his hands casually in his pockets.

"You're very thoughtful, Thomas," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Tell me... did Keller report back to you after he jumped off my roof?"

Drake’s polite smile vanished. The silver-haired judge went completely rigid.
