Chapter 7 - broken promises

The sound of high heels clicking against marble shattered the silence of the penthouse foyer.
Daniel snapped the file shut and slipped it into his briefcase just as the double doors swung open.
Victoria Drake entered, wearing an elegant emerald evening gown, a diamond necklace glittering against her throat. She was thirty-eight, strikingly beautiful, with sharp patrician features and perfectly coiffed blonde hair. She dropped her designer clutch on the console table and sighed in exasperation.
"Daniel, where on earth have you been?" Victoria asked, unhooking her pearl earrings. "The charity gala started an hour ago. The governor asked where you were, and I had to pretend you were dealing with a shipping emergency in Chicago."
Then, Victoria stopped dead in her tracks.
On the plush velvet sofa sat Sarah Miller, wearing her faded gray laundromat apron, and Lucy, curled up with her worn floral backpack. Ethan was sitting beside them, pouring Lucy a glass of apple juice from a silver tray.
Victoria’s blue eyes narrowed in disgust and bewilderment. "Daniel... what is this? Why are there vagrants in your penthouse?"
"Watch your mouth, Victoria," Daniel said coldly, stepping between her and the sofa. "This is family."
Victoria let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Family? Daniel, your son is twelve, and your brother is buried in a memorial plot. Who are these people?"
Sarah stood up, her jaw tightening with quiet dignity. "I'm Sarah Miller. And this is Julian's daughter."
The silence in the room was deafening.
Victoria’s face froze. For a split second—less than a heartbeat—Daniel saw something flash across his fiancée's eyes. It wasn't confusion. It wasn't disbelief.
It was pure, calculated panic.
Victoria recovered almost instantly, smoothing the front of her gown. "Julian’s daughter? Daniel, are you insane? Julian died eleven years ago! This woman is obviously a grifter trying to shake down the family trust before the annual shareholder meeting!"
"We ran the signet ring," Daniel said, observing Victoria’s every micro-expression. "It's Julian’s. And Lucy looks exactly like him."
Victoria crossed her arms, her demeanor turning glacial. "A pawned ring proves nothing. People buy antique jewelry all the time. If you bring this woman and her child anywhere near the Carter press conferences, the board will call for a vote of no confidence. My father will never approve this."
"Your father," Daniel repeated slowly, testing the waters. "Speaking of Judge Drake, where is he tonight?"
"He's in Washington attending an appellate conference," Victoria snapped, glancing toward the elevator doors. "Daniel, call security and have them removed. If you don't, I'll call my father's legal team right now."
Ethan stood up from the couch, his young face burning with anger. "Don't talk about them like that, Victoria! Lucy didn't ask for any of this! She was starving at school, and Dad and I are going to protect her!"
"Go to your room, Ethan," Victoria barked.
"He stays right here," Daniel commanded, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. "This is my home, Victoria. And until I get answers, Sarah and Lucy aren't going anywhere."
Victoria stared at Daniel, her lips pressing into a thin, bloodless line. "You're making a catastrophic mistake, Daniel. You have no idea what you're stirring up."
May you like
She grabbed her designer clutch from the table, spun on her heel, and stepped back into the private elevator.
As the doors slid shut, Daniel noticed her frantically dialing a number on her phone.
