Chapter 14 - justice for julian

At nine o'clock the following morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting brilliant golden rays across downtown Manhattan.
Inside the private vault of First Federal Trust, Daniel stood beside Marcus Hayes and the federal bank manager as Safe Deposit Box 714 was slid out of the steel wall.
Daniel took Julian’s tiny brass key from his pocket and inserted it into the secondary lock.
The heavy box popped open with a solid metallic click.
Inside lay Julian’s personal leather-bound journal, alongside thick stacks of notarized bank wire transfers, offshore shell company registrations, and a sealed audiotape labeled *Drake Confession - November 12.*
Marcus carefully lifted the audiotape into an evidence bag. "This is it, Dan. This ties Victoria, Judge Drake, and three senior partners at the firm directly to the embezzlement and Julian's attempted murder. They'll spend the rest of their lives in federal prison."
Daniel ran his hand over the worn leather of Julian’s journal. On the front, Julian had pressed his signet ring into the soft hide, leaving the clear imprint of the rising phoenix.
"Julian’s name is cleared," Daniel murmured. "The board can never call him a disgraced runaway again."
Two hours later, Daniel returned to the penthouse.
The atmosphere in the living room had transformed completely. Sunlight flooded through the panoramic windows. Sarah sat at the dining table, wearing clean clothes Daniel’s staff had provided, sipping fresh coffee. Her face still showed the strain of a decade of running, but the terror in her eyes was finally gone.
On the terrace, Ethan and Lucy were sitting together on the outdoor lounge chairs.
Ethan had Daniel's chef prepare two gourmet roast beef sandwiches, fresh strawberries, and chilled orange juice. Lucy was laughing, her rosy cheeks glowing in the midday sun, happily taking a huge bite of her sandwich.
Ethan looked up, saw his father standing at the glass doors, and gave him a bright, proud grin.
Daniel walked over to Sarah and set Julian’s white gold signet ring on the table in front of her, along with a certified bank trust document bearing the official Carter corporate seal.
"What is this?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling.
"Julian's share of the Carter estate," Daniel said gently. "Fifty percent of the entire company, restored to his legal heir. Lucy will never have to worry about a meal, a home, or a tuition bill for the rest of her life. And neither will you."

Sarah covered her face with her hands, tears of pure relief spilling through her fingers. "Daniel... thank you. Thank you for believing us."
"I didn't save Lucy," Daniel smiled, looking out at the terrace where Ethan was showing Lucy how to throw a baseball. "Ethan did. He saw what mattered before I did."
