Chapter 8 - the cease and desist

By midnight, Ethan had fallen asleep on the living room sofa, while Lucy was curled up in the guest bedroom under a warm down comforter.

In the penthouse library, Sarah sat across from Daniel, holding a warm mug of tea. The exhaustion in her eyes was palpable, but she refused to sleep.

"Victoria’s father... Judge Drake," Sarah began quietly. "Julian hated him. He said Drake was using Carter shell corporations to launder money for offshore investors."

Daniel rubbed his temples. "Thomas Drake has been the family’s chief legal advisor for thirty years. My father trusted him implicitly. When Julian disappeared, Drake was the one who handled the estate paperwork."

"He didn't just handle it," Sarah said, reaching into her pocket. "He buried it."

She pulled out a yellowed, folded legal document that had been laminated to protect it from moisture. She placed it on the desk in front of Daniel.

"Julian made me swear to keep this in a safe-deposit box, but when our apartment was broken into two years ago, I started carrying it with me everywhere," Sarah explained.

Daniel unfolded the document. It was a formal Cease-and-Desist and Non-Disclosure Agreement dated eleven years ago—just two weeks after Julian's car crash.

The document explicitly barred Sarah Miller from filing any paternity claims against the Carter estate, citing "national security and corporate confidentiality." Attached to the back was a photocopy of a cashier's check for five hundred thousand dollars, made out to Sarah Miller.

"Did you take this money?" Daniel asked, looking up at her.

"I tore the check in half and threw it in the face of the courier who brought it," Sarah said fiercely, her eyes blazing. "I told him my daughter’s heritage wasn't for sale. That was the night two men tried to force their way into my motel room. That was when I realized they weren't trying to pay me off—they were trying to verify where I was so they could silence us."

Daniel examined the courier receipt attached to the bottom of the form.

The courier service had been dispatched from an address in the financial district: 404 Broad Street, Suite 900.

Daniel leaned back in his leather chair. A chill ran down his spine.

Suite 900 was not Judge Drake's law office.

Suite 900 was the private executive suite of Victoria Drake's personal venture capital firm.

The courier hadn't been dispatched eleven years ago by the elderly Judge Drake alone. The order had originated from Victoria’s private office when she was just twenty-seven years old.

Victoria wasn't just covering for her father. Victoria had been managing the cover-up herself from the very beginning.

Suddenly, Daniel’s private cell phone buzzed against the mahogany desk. It was an unlisted number.

Daniel hit speakerphone. "Carter."

"Mr. Carter," a smooth, raspy voice came through the speaker. It was the man from the park—the man in the dark coat. "You have something that doesn't belong to you. And your fiancée was kind enough to confirm your current location."

Daniel stood up instantly, his jaw clenching. "Who are you?"

"My name is Keller," the man replied calmly. "And if you want your son to wake up tomorrow morning, you'll send the girl down to the lobby in five minutes."

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. "What did you say?"

"Check your balcony, Mr. Carter."
