Chapter 15 - the page in the dark

Three days later, the Carter Executive Tower held a formal press conference.
Before a sea of flashing cameras and national news journalists, Daniel stood at the podium with Sarah and Lucy by his side. He publicly announced Lucy Miller as the legitimate daughter of the late Julian Carter, restoring her full status as an heir to the Carter family legacy.
Across the city, the headlines were unanimous: *The Lost Heiress Found. Justice for Julian Carter.*
That evening, the penthouse was quiet and peaceful.
Ethan and Lucy were in the library playing chess, their laughter echoing down the hallway. Sarah was resting in the guest suite, finally sleeping without keeping one eye on the door.
Daniel sat alone at his mahogany desk, a glass of bourbon in his hand, looking out at the peaceful city lights.
On the desk before him lay Julian’s recovered leather-bound journal. The FBI had finished copying the financial evidence and returned the personal diary to Daniel that afternoon.
Daniel opened the journal, turning the yellowed pages with reverent care. Julian’s handwriting brought back a flood of memories—his brother’s sharp wit, his sketches of sailboats, his deep love for their family.
Daniel flipped toward the back of the book, curious to read Julian’s final entry from the night of the crash eleven years ago.
The entry was dated November 14—the exact day Julian’s car went off the bridge.
Daniel read the first few lines:
*Daniel, if you are reading this, Victoria and Drake have already won. But you need to know the truth before it's too late.*
Daniel frowned. His eyes moved rapidly down the page.
*They lied to you about that night, Daniel. Julian wasn't Lucy's father.*
Daniel stopped breathing. His hand froze around his glass of bourbon.
He read the next sentence, his heart pounding violently against his ribs:
*Sarah was carrying your child, Daniel. When your wife Katherine disappeared eleven years ago, she didn't die in that private clinic. She took the offshore money and faked her death to protect Ethan from Julian's enemies. I claimed Lucy was mine so Drake's men would hunt me instead of you.*
Daniel stared at the paper in absolute disbelief.
His wife Katherine. The woman he had buried in an empty family mausoleum eleven years ago.
Taped to the final page of the journal was a small, glossy color photograph.
Daniel peeled back the yellowed tape with shaking fingers and lifted the photograph to the desk lamp.
The photo showed a sunny beachside villa in Southern California. Standing near the patio was a woman with vibrant dark hair and a familiar gentle smile—Katherine.
She was holding a newborn baby boy in her arms.
And in the lower right corner of the photograph was an unmistakable digital date stamp:
*June 24, 2014.*
Exactly six months *after* Daniel had attended Katherine’s funeral.
Daniel’s phone on the desk suddenly lit up. An unknown caller with a California area code flashed across the screen.

Daniel picked it up with a trembling hand, pressing it to his ear.
"Daniel?" a woman’s soft, familiar voice whispered through the line. "You shouldn't have opened the box."
