Chapter 15 - Lucasta’s Counterstory
Lucasta did not confess neatly.
Her lawyers presented another interpretation.
Mara had asked for privacy.
True.
I had respected no contact.
True.
Lucasta acted as liaison.
True.
She believed direct communication would destabilize me during a dangerous security period.
Maybe initially.
She believed Mara’s pregnancy claim might be emotional leverage.
Documented in her messages.
She denied knowing with certainty I was the father.
Fair until DNA.
She argued she had no duty to deliver every personal letter after Mara asked for privacy.
Weak after repeated later requests.
Then:
She claimed she planned to tell me once Tamsin was older.
When?
No date.
Why lock Tamsin in the catering room?
“Panic.”
That I believed.
She saw a six-year concealment approaching me physically.
For once she had no email, routing note, or polite phrasing to absorb it.
She used a door.
Then she attacked Mara publicly through a civil filing.
Alleged Mara was trying to exploit the Ashford name.
Evidence?
Mara had requested no money from me for six years.
No child support.
No trust distribution.
No payoff.
That claim collapsed.
Then Lucasta produced one message from Mara during pregnancy:
If Corvin wants nothing to do with us, maybe that is better than raising a child inside that family.
True.
Lucasta said:
“See?”
Mara said:
“Yes. I was angry and afraid.”
A single sentence did not cancel forty-two later communications.
Context again.
Lucasta also claimed Tamsin’s sudden recognition would:
“destabilize family governance.”
There.
That phrase appeared in her private memo.
Why would a six-year-old destabilize governance?
She would not run anything.
But my branch’s planning assumptions changed.
Several family trusts and councils treated:
descendants
as relevant to future succession and beneficiary structures.
Tamsin’s existence meant estate plans, branch representation, and long-term foundation governance required updates.
Nothing immediate.
Lucasta had spent six years behaving as if my branch ended with me.
She built influence in the gap.
The child did not burn the family.
