Chapter 4 - How Tamsin Reached the Gala

Mara did not send a six-year-old alone into a ballroom full of Ashfords.

That became one of the first rumors online.

It was false.

Mara had retained attorney Caroline Beck six weeks earlier.

Caroline contacted Martin Gray’s office.

Not Lucasta.

She said her client had:

“a longstanding unresolved family matter involving Corvin Ashford and a minor child.”

Martin did not tell me immediately.

Why?

He asked for identifying documents first.

Reasonable.

Caroline provided:

Mara’s identification.

Tamsin’s birth certificate.

Copies of correspondence sent to Ashford properties.

Courier receipts.

A sworn statement.

Photograph of the locket.

No DNA result.

No court-established paternity.

Martin scheduled a confidential meeting with me for the gala night because he knew I would already be in New York and wanted to avoid using corporate offices.

That choice later looked questionable.

He admitted it.

A gala is not a neutral family-law venue.

Still, the planned meeting was in a private third-floor library an hour before speeches.

Mara agreed to come to New York.

Then panicked.

At the hotel she told Caroline:

“I cannot walk into that family with Tamsin watching me collapse.”

So the revised plan:

June would bring Tamsin.

Martin would receive the sealed originals and meet the child briefly.

If I wished to proceed, Mara would come the next morning with her attorney.

No surprise confrontation.

No handing over custody.

Just confirmation that Corvin Ashford would finally receive something directly.

Tamsin insisted on carrying the locket.

Mara gave her the sealed envelope too.

Caroline objected.

Mara said:

“I want one thing to arrive in his hand without another adult deciding whether he gets it.”

There.

Six years of frustration in one choice.

June brought Tamsin through the private entrance.

A gala staff member checked them in.

Lucasta saw the appointment on a restricted event-management schedule.

That access existed because she coordinated VIP movements.

She went downstairs personally.

June later told police Lucasta said:

“Corvin has agreed to see the child first. He does not want Mara’s relatives present until identity is confirmed.”

June disliked it.

But Martin’s name appeared on the appointment sheet.

Lucasta had a gala credential.

A hotel security escort stood nearby.

Everything looked official.

June said:

“I want to speak with Martin.”

Lucasta answered:

“He’s waiting upstairs. We’ll bring you once Corvin decides whether he wants the larger meeting.”

That should have triggered more resistance.

June admitted it.

“I was afraid if I made a scene, they’d shut the meeting down.”

Fear of powerful people did part of Lucasta’s work for her.

Tamsin left with the escort.

Lucasta dismissed him at the service elevator.

Said:

“I have her.”

Then took Tamsin toward the catering corridor.

According to hallway video, Tamsin asked something.

No audio.

Lucasta stopped.

Bent toward her.

Then grabbed her upper arm.

Tamsin resisted.

Lucasta shoved her into the catering room.

Locked the door.

Four minutes later I arrived.

No kidnapping network.

No underground prison.

A powerful woman saw the truth approaching a door she controlled and made one desperate decision to keep it closed.

May you like

Then I heard the pounding.
