Chapter 3 - the phantom clinic

Dr. Henderson arrived within thirty minutes, his medical kit in hand and two trusted pediatric nurses flanking him. The atmosphere inside the lakefront mansion was thick with silent hostility. Margaret, Ethan, and Lauren sat in the leather armchairs of Daniel's mahogany study under the watchful eyes of two armed private security guards. None of them spoke, but the air vibrated with Lauren’s whispered fury and Ethan’s nervous foot-tapping.

In the sunroom overlooking the lake, the nurses gently tended to Ivy and Skye. They cleaned their tiny dusty feet, wrapped them in soft cashmere blankets, and fed them warm oatmeal and sliced fruit. When Dr. Henderson approached with the sterile buccal swabs, Ivy flinched, pulling Skye behind her.

"It won't hurt, sweet girl," Daniel said softly, kneeling beside them. He took the doctor’s swab first and brushed it gently against his own inner cheek. "See? Just a tickle. Daddy's doing it first."

The word *Daddy* slipped out effortlessly, vibrating with an ache three years in the making.

Ivy stared at him, her gray-green eyes wide and unblinking. "You are Daddy?"

"I am," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I promise you, I am."

Skye let out a tiny breath and leaned forward, allowing Dr. Henderson to gently swab the inside of her cheek. Ivy followed, never breaking eye contact with Daniel.

"I'll run the rush protocol at the university lab in Madison," Henderson murmured to Daniel as he sealed the vials into tamper-proof containers. "We’ll have preliminary markers in six hours, definitive results by dawn. But Daniel... medically speaking, their dental development, their eye coloration, the distinctive notch on their left earlobes... they are Claire's. There is no doubt in my mind."

Daniel nodded grimly. "Thank you, Arthur. Keep this completely confidential."

Once Henderson departed, Daniel walked back into his private study and shut the heavy oak doors. He stood behind his desk, looking down at his mother.

"Where is she, Margaret?" Daniel asked.

Margaret sat with her chin raised, clutching her designer purse on her lap. "Daniel, you are chasing ghosts. Claire died on Route 51. The car caught fire. The dental records matched."

"Did they?" Daniel pulled open his laptop, his fingers flying across the keys. Over the past three hours, his private investigator, Marcus, had been digging into the Whitmore family trust records from three years ago. "Because I just pulled the financial records for the St. Jude Medical Haven up in Bayfield. A private hospice clinic funded entirely by an anonymous donation from the Whitmore Foundation. Payments authorized solely by you, Mother."

Margaret’s eyes flickered, but she remained silent.

"What is Bayfield?" Daniel demanded. "Why were five hundred thousand dollars transferred to an off-the-grid facility the week of Claire’s memorial service?"

Ethan couldn't take it anymore. He jumped up from his chair, his hands flying through the air. "Mom, stop! He’s going to find out anyway! He has all the records!"

"Ethan, shut your mouth!" Lauren snarled, grabbing her husband’s sleeve. "You don't say a word without our attorney present!"

"Shut up, Lauren!" Ethan shouted, his composure shattering completely. He turned to Daniel, his eyes wild and desperate. "Daniel, listen to me! Mom told me Claire was going to leave! She told me Claire was going to divorce you and take half the real-estate holdings, take the family name into the mud! Mom said she was having an affair!"

"She was not having an affair!" Daniel roared, slamming both hands onto the desk. The sheer force of his voice shook the room, silencing Ethan instantly. "Claire loved me! We were trying for a baby for two years!"

"She was pregnant, Daniel!" Ethan cried out, tears finally breaking through his red-rimmed eyes. "She was already three months pregnant when she found out Mom was skimming millions from the charitable trust! Claire was going to go to the board! She was going to go to the press! Mom said she would ruin everything we built!"

Daniel felt the blood turn to ice in his veins. The room seemed to tilt.

He looked at Margaret. The sixty-five-year-old woman didn't cry. Her eyes were hard, remorseless, like polished slate.

"She was a schoolteacher from nowhere," Margaret said coldly, her voice devoid of human warmth. "She married into the Whitmore bloodline and thought she could dictate how this family manages its wealth. She wanted to expose an accounting discrepancy that would have destroyed our stock value. She threatened to take my son, my grandchildren, and my empire."

"So you staged a car crash?" Daniel's voice was barely a breath, choked by sheer horror. "You burned a car and told me my wife was dead?"

"She wasn't supposed to have the children," Margaret said, her voice dropping into a sinister whisper. "She was supposed to stay in that private clinic in Bayfield until the delivery, sign over full custody to Ethan and Lauren—who actually deserved heirs—and disappear to Europe with a settlement. But she tricked the staff. She escaped into the woods before the transfer was completed."

Daniel stepped out from behind the desk. His hands were shaking, not from fear, but from the raw, volcanic rage surging through his body.

"Where is she now, Margaret?" Daniel whispered, stepping directly into his mother's personal space. "Tell me where Claire is, or so help me God, you will never see the light of day again."

Margaret looked up at her eldest son, a terrible, smug smirk curling the edge of her lips. "I don't know, Daniel. The cabin burned down two days ago. That’s how the little rats escaped."
