Chapter 8 - the unraveling

The handcuffs clicked around Margaret’s wrists with a harsh, metallic finality. She struggled, her heels slipping on the wet floor, but the marshals held her firmly, marching her toward the grand foyer.

"Daniel! You will regret this!" Margaret shrieked as she was dragged down the hall. "Without me, you are nothing! You hear me? Nothing!"

Her screams echoed down the marble corridors, fading only when the heavy front doors slammed shut behind her.

Inside the library, Ethan remained on the floor, weeping silently. Lauren stood frozen, staring at the floor where Margaret’s shattered vase lay.

Daniel turned his gaze onto his younger brother. "Ethan."

Ethan looked up, his face red and swollen with tears. "Daniel... please. Mom forced me. She had leverage over me. My investments went under, and she bought out my debt. She told me if I didn't help her keep Claire's location quiet, she would ruin me."

"You knew Claire was alive for three years," Daniel said, every word dripping with cold disgust. "You watched me visit an empty grave every Sunday. You sat at my Thanksgiving table, drank my wine, and smiled at me while my daughters were eating scraps of bread in an abandoned cabin."

"I was terrified of her!" Ethan sobbed, crawling forward on his knees. "Daniel, please... we’re brothers!"

"Brothers protect each other, Ethan," Daniel replied, stepping back so Ethan couldn't touch his shoes. "Brothers don't sell each other's children for real estate."

The federal marshals returned, stepping up behind Ethan and Lauren.

"Ethan Whitmore, Lauren Whitmore," the marshal stated. "You are being detained as co-conspirators in the financial fraud and accessory to kidnapping."

Lauren let out a sharp cry as the handcuffs snapped around her slender wrists. "Ethan, do something! Call my father! Tell them I had nothing to do with this!"

"Save your breath, Lauren," Claire said, stepping forward. Her hazel eyes were fierce and unwavering. "We found the wire transfers from your personal boutique account to the men who set the fire in Bayfield. You personally signed the authorization."

Lauren’s mouth fell open, all color draining from her features. She looked at Claire with sheer, terrified realization. There was no escape. There was no family name to hide behind.

As the officers escorted Ethan and Lauren out of the estate, silence finally settled over the mansion. The suffocating weight that had hung over the property for three long years began to lift like fog burned away by the morning sun.

Daniel turned to Claire. He reached out, his hand gently resting against her cheek. "It's really over."

Claire leaned into his touch, closing her eyes as a soft, genuine smile touched her lips for the first time in years. "Not yet. Our daughters are waiting."
