Chapter 6 - the edge of the quarry

The two men spun around as the police sirens wailed, blinding high-beams illuminating the entire plateau.
"State police! Drop your weapons and get on the ground!" Vance’s voice boomed over the cruiser's loudspeaker.
The men panicked. One of them reached for a handgun tucked into his waistband, but two sharp cracks echoed through the night air as police snipers disabled the threat instantly, sending the men sprawling into the dirt with non-lethal precision.
Daniel didn't wait for the officers to secure the scene. He ran past the flashing red and blue lights, his boots sliding on the loose gravel, straight toward the edge of the pit.
Claire fell to her knees on the rocky ground, gasping for breath. Her fair skin was smudged with soot and dirt, her clothes torn, but her hazel eyes—the exact same color as Daniel’s—blazed with unbroken fire.
"Daniel?" she choked out, her voice barely a whisper against the wind.
Daniel dropped to his knees in front of her, his hands trembling as he pulled a pocketknife to slice through the zip ties binding her wrists. The moment her hands were free, he pulled her fiercely into his arms, burying his face into her hair.
She was real. She was warm. She was alive.
"I have you," Daniel sobbed openly, tears streaming down his face, unashamed in front of the officers securing the perimeter. "I have you, Claire. You're safe. I've got you."
Claire clung to him with desperate strength, her fingers digging into the fabric of his torn suit jacket. "The girls... Daniel, the girls! Did they find you? Did Ivy make it?"
"They're home," Daniel said, cupping her face with both hands, his thumbs gently wiping away the soot and tears from her rosy cheeks. "They were on the front steps, Claire. Ivy had the bread roll. Skye had the pendant. They are at the estate right now, safe, warm, and protected."
Claire let out a ragged, trembling cry of relief, her forehead resting against Daniel’s chest as three years of sheer terror and isolation washed out of her in a flood of tears.
"Margaret found our cabin three days ago," Claire wept. "She sent men to burn it down. She wanted no trace left. She told me she was going to take the girls and raise them in Switzerland under Ethan and Lauren’s names, so no one would ever know the truth about the fraud."
Daniel pressed a tender kiss to her forehead, his voice turning to steel. "She will never touch our daughters again. She will never see the light of day."
Captain Vance approached slowly, holstering his weapon and looking down at the reunited couple with grim satisfaction. "The two men are in custody, Daniel. They’ve already started talking. Margaret Whitmore wired fifty thousand dollars to an offshore account this morning with instructions to finish the job."
Daniel stood, lifting Claire into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all. He looked at Vance, his eyes hard and uncompromising.
"Charge her with attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and fraud," Daniel said. "Do not offer bail. I want the entire Whitmore legal team mobilized to ensure she spends the rest of her life in maximum security."

"Consider it done," Vance nodded.
Daniel carried Claire toward the medical helicopter. For the first time in three years, the darkness that had consumed his life was shattered by the dawn.
