Chapter 9 - the pieces of bread

Upstairs in the sun-drenched master bedroom, Ivy and Skye were sitting on the massive king-sized bed, surrounded by soft plush pillows and colorful new toys the staff had rushed to purchase that morning. They were dressed in matching light-blue cotton dresses, their hair brushed and tied with soft silk ribbons.
Skye was holding a stuffed white bunny, hugging it against her chest, while Ivy sat vigilantly at the edge of the mattress, watching the bedroom door.
When the handle turned, Ivy tensed immediately.
The door swung open, and Claire stepped into the room.
For a second, the world seemed to stop spinning.
Ivy’s eyes went wide. The breath caught in her tiny chest. She dropped her hands to her lap, her little chin trembling violently.
"Mommy?" Skye whispered, her voice barely a breath.
Claire fell to her knees at the side of the bed, tears streaming down her face, her arms opening wide. "My babies. My sweet, brave little girls."
Ivy didn't hesitate. She launched herself off the edge of the mattress straight into Claire’s arms, burying her face into her mother's neck with a ragged, heartbreaking sob. Skye followed immediately, scrambling across the duvet and throwing her little arms around Claire’s shoulders.
Claire held them both against her chest, rocking them back and forth, weeping openly as she pressed kisses into their soft, clean hair. "I'm here. Mommy's here. Nobody is ever going to take you away again. I promise you. I promise you forever."
Daniel stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame, watching the three people who completed his soul. His throat tightened with an overwhelming wave of gratitude and fierce, protective love.
Ivy pulled back slightly, her little hands framing Claire’s face. "The lady with the beads... did the bad lady catch you?"
"No, sweet girl," Claire said softly, brushing a stray tear from Ivy’s rosy cheek. "Daddy caught the bad lady. Daddy saved us."
Ivy turned her head, looking at Daniel standing by the door.
Daniel walked over and sat on the edge of the bed beside them. Ivy reached out, her small fingers wrapping around his thumb, pulling him into the circle. Daniel wrapped his strong arms around all three of them, holding his family whole for the first time in their lives.
Then, Ivy reached into the small pocket of her new blue dress.
She pulled out a tiny, folded white napkin. Carefully, with reverent hands, she unfolded it to reveal the fresh crust of bread she had saved from the kitchen counter that morning.
She looked up at Daniel, her gray-green eyes shining with pure innocence.
"You can have it now, Daddy," Ivy whispered, offering the bread to him on her open palm. "We don't have to hide it anymore."
May you like
Daniel stared at the small piece of bread. The lump in his throat was so large he could barely breathe. He took the crust from her tiny hand, brought her little fingers to his lips, and kissed them gently.
"No, my brave little girl," Daniel choked out, his voice thick with tears. "We never have to hide anything ever again."
