Chapter 7 - the board's reckoning

Dawn broke over Lake Geneva in brilliant shades of rose and amber. Inside the grand library of the Whitmore estate, the atmosphere was suffocating. Margaret sat in an antique armchair, her posture rigid, though her ivory wrap dress was wrinkled and her makeup was beginning to crack.

Beside her, Ethan looked like a broken man, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall, staring blankly at the Persian rug. Lauren paced back and forth near the French doors, checking her gold watch every thirty seconds, her manicured nails bitten down to the quick.

Two armed security guards stood motionless at the door.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors swung open.

Margaret straightened her spine, preparing her final defense. "Daniel, this ridiculous farce has gone on long enough. You cannot hold your own mother hostage in—"

The words died in Margaret’s throat.

Walking through the doorway was Daniel. But he wasn't alone.

Beside him, dressed in a soft cream cashmere sweater and clean jeans, walked Claire. Her hair fell gracefully across her shoulders, her fair skin radiant despite the exhaustion in her eyes. Her chin was held high, her gaze locking onto Margaret with absolute, unshakable power.

Margaret let out a strangled, dry gasp, staggering to her feet. Her pearls shook against her chest. "C... Claire?"

Ethan let out a low groan, burying his face in his hands. "It's over. Oh God, it's over."

Lauren stepped back until her spine hit the glass doors, her eyes wide with terror. "You were dead... the funeral... the records..."

"You wanted me dead, Lauren," Claire said, her voice clear, steady, and chillingly calm. "Because you and Ethan were drowning in seven million dollars of private debt. You needed Daniel to die without heirs so Ethan would inherit the full Whitmore estate. And Margaret promised you my babies to legitimize your claim to the board."

"That's a lie!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking into an ugly, shrill screech. "Daniel, she is an outsider! She manipulated you! Everything I did, I did to protect this family! To protect the empire your father built!"

"My father would have despised you," Daniel said, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

He stepped forward, dropping a thick leather folder onto the center table. The heavy thud echoed through the silent library.

"Arthur Henderson’s DNA results arrived twenty minutes ago," Daniel announced. "Ivy and Skye are my biological daughters. The match is 99.9%. They are the legal, sole heirs to the Whitmore estate."

Margaret’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. "They are mongrels! Born in the dirt! I will tie this up in probate court for the next thirty years! I control the board of trustees!"

"Not anymore," Daniel said calmly.

The side door opened, and three men in dark business suits entered, accompanied by four uniformed federal marshals. The man in the lead was Arthur Pendelton, the senior chairman of the Whitmore board and Daniel's godfather.

"Arthur?" Margaret gasped, her voice faltering.

"Margaret Whitmore," Arthur Pendelton said with heavy disgust. "An emergency session of the board was convened at five a.m. With Claire’s testimony and the financial audit Marcus provided, the board has unanimously stripped you of all voting rights, executive powers, and trust disbursements. Furthermore, the board has authorized the immediate release of all internal financial documents to the Department of Justice."

The lead federal marshal stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Margaret Whitmore, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, interstate child endangerment, and wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

Margaret lunged backward, knocking over a crystal vase that shattered across the parquet floor. "Don't touch me! Do you know who I am? Daniel! Tell them! Daniel, I am your mother!"

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He looked at the woman who had stolen three years of his life, who had hunted his wife and starved his infant daughters in the woods.

"You are a criminal," Daniel said coldly. "Take her away."
