Chapter 2 - the key in the velvet

Lily walked softly across the room, completely unbothered by the terrifying tension suffocating the air. She knelt beside the iron base of the sewing machine, her small bandaged fingers reaching into a hidden wooden crevice beneath the lower treadle tray.

With a soft mechanical click, a small concealed compartment slid open.

Lily reached inside and pulled out a velvet-wrapped object, holding it up toward Nathan with both hands.

Nathan took the velvet bundle with steady fingers. Unwrapping the worn fabric, he revealed a heavy silver key stamped with the Moretti family crest and a folded, yellowed piece of paper stained with old dark drops.

"What is this, Sarah?" Nathan asked, his voice dropping into an icy, dangerous register as he turned toward the bed. "Why do you have my mother's key?"

Sarah took a shallow, painful breath, her pale hands clutching her nightgown. "Your mother didn't die of a heart attack thirty years ago, Nate. She was murdered... and she gave me that key to protect you before she took her last breath."

Nathan’s jaw set like iron, a muscle twitching in his cheek. He looked down at the seven-year-old girl standing beside his knee. The math struck his brain like a physical blow. Seven years old. The exact amount of time Sarah had been gone.

"Is she mine, Sarah?" Nathan whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, terrifying emotion.

Sarah looked into his dark eyes, tears flowing down her face. "She's your daughter, Nate. I ran away seven years ago because your uncle Victor threatened to kill her in my womb if I stayed in Chicago."

Before Nathan could answer, the front door of the apartment was kicked open with a deafening crash!

Four broad-shouldered men dressed in heavy tactical coats, holding silenced pistols, burst into the narrow hallway!

"Search the room!" a harsh voice shouted from the front door. "Don Victor wants the girl and the machine destroyed before Moretti finds them!"

Nathan didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. He pulled his heavy silver revolver from his suit holster, stepped in front of the bed, and shielded Sarah and Lily with his massive frame.

"Marcus!" Nathan roared into his encrypted comms unit. "Clear the building!"

Nathan fired three precise shots through the bedroom doorway, the heavy rounds tearing through the plaster and hitting two of the incoming hitmen, sending them crashing back into the narrow kitchen!

The remaining two attackers fired back, bullets whistling through the bedroom wall and shattering the glass medicine bottles on the nightstand.

Nathan rolled across the floorboards, grabbing Lily by her waist and tucking her securely against his chest as he used the iron frame of the sewing machine as cover. He fired twice more, eliminating the third attacker, while his head of security, Marcus, burst through the front door with six armed Moretti enforcers, neutralizing the final hitman in a swift, brutal fluid motion.

Silence returned to the small apartment, broken only by the smell of gunpowder and the sound of Sarah's weak coughing.

Marcus stepped into the bedroom, his weapon held low. "Boss! The building is secure. Who were these men?"

"My uncle Victor's private crew," Nathan growled, standing up and lifting Lily into his arms. The little girl buried her face into his dark suit lapels, holding onto his neck with all her tiny strength.

Nathan walked over to the bed, picking up Sarah gently in his broad arms, wrapping her in the thin blanket.

"Where are we going, Nate?" Sarah whispered weakly against his chest.

"Home," Nathan said, his dark eyes glowing with a lethal, absolute authority. "To Lake Shore Drive. And anyone who comes near my family dies today."
