Chapter 20 - the open doorway

The midnight air was biting cold as Sarah, Lily, and I stood in the deep subterranean basement of the historic City Library. Mr. Sterling had provided us with the master key to the maintenance tunnels beneath the building, allowing us to bypass the main security gates unnoticed.

The tunnel walls were damp brick, dripping with water that pooled around our boots. At the very end of the long passageway stood a massive iron door reinforced with brass rivets, completely unmarked, hidden behind a heavy stack of discarded archives.

In the center of the iron door was a circular lock mechanism containing two keyholes: one shaped like a loom shuttle, and another small, square aperture beside it.

"This is it," I said, pulling the silver key from my neck.

Sarah stepped forward, pulling a small brass object from her pocket—a square-tipped metal bar that young Lily had found hidden inside the hollow leg of the sewing machine hours ago, which we had almost dismissed as a spare tool.

"She gave us both a piece," Sarah said softly, her eyes shining in the beam of my flashlight. "Neither of us could have opened this alone."

Together, we inserted our respective keys into the dual locking mechanism. We turned them simultaneously.

A loud, deep mechanical thunk resonated through the stone floor beneath our feet. Heavy iron gears groaned inside the door frame as centuries of rust gave way. The massive door slowly swung inward, unsealing a dark chamber that had remained untouched for fifteen years.

I stepped across the threshold, raising my flashlight beam into the darkness.

The room was filled with rows of wooden filing cabinets, metal trunks, and hanging blueprint displays. But in the center of the vault sat a single desk, lit softly by a green glass banker's lamp that had just automatically flickered to life via a floor sensor.

On top of the desk lay a fresh leather folder, completely free of dust. Beside it rested an open coffee mug, steam still rising faintly into the cold air.

Footsteps echoed softly from the darkness behind the desk.

I held my breath, my heart hammering wildly in my chest as a shadow moved into the light.
