Chapter 5 - the bloodline rule

By 2:00 AM, Nathan returned to the Lake Shore estate. The mansion was quiet, the warm yellow lights of the foyer casting long, peaceful shadows across the marble floors.

Nathan walked up the grand staircase to the second-floor medical wing. He stepped quietly into the private room.

Sarah lay on the comfortable bed, an IV line hooked to her arm, her pale cheeks restored with a faint, healthy color under the care of the private doctors. Resting her head against Sarah's side, fast asleep in a soft yellow nightgown, was seven-year-old Lily, her small hand holding tight to her mother's fingers.

Nathan stood near the edge of the bed, staring at his family in the quiet dim light. For seven long years, he had lived like an empty shell—ruthless, cold, and feared by millions, but utterly dead inside. Looking at them now, a profound, fierce warmth filled his chest.

Sarah opened her dark eyes softly, looking up at him. "Nate..."

Nathan walked over, taking a seat on the edge of the mattress. He reached out, his broad, calloused thumb gently wiping a loose strand of hair from her forehead.

"The doctor says your fever is breaking," Nathan murmured softly. "You're going to be okay, Sarah."

"Nate... Victor won't stop," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling with lingering terror. "He has men inside the police department. He has men on the city council. He will try to destroy Lily's name before the Friday assembly."

Nathan reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He opened the lid.

Inside rested a breathtaking three-carat diamond ring carved with subtle silver roses along the band—the original engagement ring he had bought for Sarah seven years ago before she vanished.

Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. Tears welled in her eyes. "Nate..."

"I kept it in my desk for seven years, Sarah," Nathan said, taking her fair hand gently in his. He slipped the ring onto her finger. It fitted perfectly. "Under the 1898 Moretti Charter, a woman wearing the Don's ring holds absolute immunity. Not even the High Council can touch you or Lily now."

Lily stirred softly in her sleep, opening her dark brown eyes. She looked at the shiny diamond ring on her mother's finger, then looked up at Nathan with a small, sleepy smile.

"Is that for Mommy?" Lily whispered.

Nathan reached down, lifting his daughter gently into his lap, wrapping his broad arms around both of them. "It's for your mom, Lily. And this house is yours now. Nobody is ever going to make you sew clothes in the dark again."

Lily snuggled her small face into Nathan's dark suit lapel, her small hand holding his thumb tightly. "I like it here, Daddy."

The word Daddy echoed through Nathan's chest like a thunderclap, sending a wave of fierce, unshakeable devotion through his soul.
