Chapter 9 - the new morning

Three weeks later, the morning sun broke bright and warm over Lake Michigan, painting the calm water in brilliant shades of gold and blue.

The dark clouds that had hung over the Moretti estate for thirty years were entirely gone. The traitors had been cleared from the city, the family's assets were fully secured, and peace had returned to Lake Shore Drive.

In the sunlit garden behind the main house, a small stone memorial had been erected under the shade of a flourishing oak tree. Carved into the white granite were two names: Isabella Moretti & Clara Bennett — Guardians of the Light.

Sarah stood before the monument, dressed in a simple, elegant cream silk dress. She laid a bouquet of fresh white roses at the base of the stone, her face peaceful and radiant.

Footsteps rustled softly on the grass behind her.

Nathan walked up beside her, wearing a dark blue linen suit with the sleeves unbuttoned at his wrists. He reached out, wrapping his broad arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his side.

"They would be proud of you, Sarah," Nathan said softly, looking down at the carved names. "You carried their light through the dark."

Sarah leaned her head against his broad chest, taking a deep, peaceful breath of the warm summer air. "We carried it together, Nate."

Down on the sunny lawn, seven-year-old Lily was running through the grass, playing with a small golden retriever puppy Nathan had bought for her birthday. She wore a bright new yellow dress, her long brown hair flowing free, her small hands clean and completely healed, no longer wearing a single bandage.

Her bright, joyful laughter echoed across the quiet garden—a sound that filled every corner of the estate with warmth.

Lily ran up to them, holding her puppy in her arms, her brown eyes beaming with pure happiness. "Daddy! Look how fast Copper runs!"

Nathan smiled—a bright, genuine, handsome smile that transformed his rugged features—and lifted his daughter into his arms, holding both Sarah and Lily tightly against his chest.

"He's fast, sweetie," Nathan murmured gently, kissing her cheek. "But not as fast as you."
