Chapter 1 - The Yellow Flower on the Mirror

The afternoon sun streamed through the soaring arched windows of the Moretti lakefront estate, casting golden light across the polished marble floors and dark mahogany furnishings. In the center of the expansive living room, Alessandro Moretti lay asleep on a long black leather sofa.
At late thirty, Alessandro was a man whose name brought silence to the rooms of rival syndicates across Chicago. Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular, he radiated a frightening, controlled power even in deep exhaustion. His dark navy suit jacket was slightly unbuttoned, exposing a crisp white dress shirt open at the collar, where intricate dark tattoos crept up his neck. Light stubble lined his sharp jaw, and his luxury wristwatch caught the afternoon glare as his broad chest rose and fell in heavy, rhythmic breathing.
Slipping quietly across the Persian rug was three-year-old Emma Delgado. The housekeeper's toddler daughter was a tiny, fearless creature with soft brown hair tied into a small, lopsided ponytail. She wore a mustard-yellow floral dress with white lace trim, carrying a small plastic watercolor palette in one hand and a thin paintbrush in the other.
Emma stopped beside the sleeping mob boss. She tilted her head, her bright brown eyes observing his dark, severe expression. With complete calm, she dipped her brush into a drop of wet yellow paint and carefully drew a bright yellow flower directly across Alessandro’s right cheek.
She stepped back, giggling silently. Finding her work incomplete, she dipped her brush into blue paint and added a blue butterfly near his forehead. She painted small orange marks along his sharp jawline and traced a colorful curved smile around his lips.
Emma leaned close to his ear, her innocent voice breaking the quiet room. "You looked sad."
At that exact moment, twenty-eight-year-old Sophia Delgado stepped into the living room carrying a polished silver tea tray loaded with porcelain cups and hot water. Dressed in her neat black-and-white maid uniform with her dark hair pinned back, Sophia looked exhausted and anxious.
Her eyes landed on her daughter standing over the sleeping billionaire. Then her gaze shifted to Alessandro’s face, covered in bright yellow, blue, and orange watercolors.
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. The silver tea tray slipped from her trembling fingers.
CLANG!
The silver tray smashed onto the marble floor, shattering porcelain cups and sending hot tea splashing across the rug.
Sophia clutched her hands over her mouth, her fair skin going completely pale. "Emma… what did you do?"
The sharp crash echoed through the high ceilings. Alessandro’s dark eyes opened instantly.
He didn't jump or shout. He sat up smoothly on the black leather sofa, his dark gaze piercing the room. He reached up with his broad, tattooed hand, touching his cheek, and looked down at his fingers, now stained with wet yellow paint.
In the doorway of the living room stood Vincent Romano, the estate manager. At late fifty, Vincent was impeccably groomed in a dark tailored suit, his silver hair neatly styled, wearing a small silver crucifix around his neck. Vincent watched the scene with cold, calculating eyes.
Sophia stood frozen in sheer terror, her hands trembling violently. "Mr. Moretti… I am so sorry! I will pack our things right now—"
Emma held up her small paintbrush, her face beaming with pure, innocent pride. "I made him pretty, Mama."
Alessandro slowly stood up to his full height, his broad frame looming over the room. He didn't look angry. He walked deliberately toward a massive antique gilded mirror mounted on the living room wall.
He stared at his reflection. The feared Mafia Boss of Chicago stood draped in a navy suit, his face adorned with a bright yellow flower, a blue butterfly, orange sunbursts, and a colorful painted smile.
Emma trotted up beside his polished leather shoes, looking proudly at their reflections in the glass.

Suddenly, Emma raised her small hand and pointed her paintbrush toward the doorway. She locked her bright eyes onto the silver crucifix resting on Vincent’s chest.
"That’s the man I saw hiding something in your office," Emma whispered.
