Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Lakefront Manor

By three o'clock the following morning, a dense, white fog rolled in off Lake Michigan, wrapping the Moretti lakefront estate in a silent, ghostly shroud.
The international council in Zurich had refused to wait for a summit. At three-fifteen, three high-speed tactical assault boats cut through the fog, landing thirty elite European mercenaries on the private beach beneath the estate cliffs.
Red alarm strobes flared instantly across the high ceilings of the mansion as the perimeter motion sensors tripped.
Inside the master suite in the east wing, Alessandro stood before the full-length mirror, strapping on a heavy tactical vest over his black shirt. His broad frame radiated a terrifying, lethal authority.
Sophia stood beside the bed, dressed in a warm sweater and trousers, holding Emma close. Emma was wide awake, holding her small watercolor palette and paintbrush like a tiny lucky charm.
"Alessandro," Sophia whispered, her voice tight with fear as the muffled sound of explosive breaches echoed from the lower boathouse. "Are they coming for Emma?"
Alessandro stepped over to them, dropping to one knee before the mother and child. He reached into his vest pocket, pulling out a small, carved wooden eagle that his brother Julian had given him years ago, and placed it into Emma’s small hand.
"Keep this safe for me, Emma," Alessandro requested softly, his gravelly voice filled with deep affection.
Emma nodded solemnly, holding the wooden eagle in her left hand and her paintbrush in her right. "I'll keep it safe, Uncle Alessandro."
Alessandro looked up into Sophia’s eyes, his hand cupping her cheek with intense, fierce tenderness. "Take Emma into the subterranean vault behind the study. Marcus is waiting at the door. I will clear the grounds."
"Promise me you'll come back," Sophia begged softly, leaning her cheek against his hand.
"I promise," Alessandro whispered. He kissed her forehead gently, then stood up, racking the slide of his tactical rifle with a crisp, lethal click.
For forty-five minutes, the lower levels of the estate became a battlefield. Alessandro moved through the dark marble corridors like an invincible shadow, leading his elite security detail with surgical precision.
Every mercenary team that stepped through the boathouse or the terrace was systematically neutralized, their tactical advantage crushed against the iron defense of the Moretti warlord.

By five o'clock in the morning, the remaining European breachers were forced into total surrender on the beach, their weapons stacked on the wet sand as state police helicopters hovered overhead.
The siege of Chicago had failed.
