Chapter 8 - The Ledger of the Bloodline

By midnight, the rival bosses had departed the estate in absolute submission, leaving the Moretti family as the undisputed sovereigns of the Chicago territory.
The grand study was quiet, warm, and illuminated by the soft glow of the fireplace.
Alessandro sat behind his oak desk, reviewing the documents recovered from the Swiss deposit vault using Vincent's silver crucifix key.
Sitting across from him in a leather armchair was Sophia, holding four-year-old Emma, who was fast asleep in her mother's lap, her small hand resting over her wooden paintbrush.
Alessandro set a thick, gold-embossed ledger flat on the desk before Sophia.
"This is the official bloodline trust registered by my brother Julian, Sophia," Alessandro revealed softly. "Thirty percent of the Moretti global shipping terminals, the lakefront estate, and our international foundation are legally registered under Emma's name."
Sophia looked down at the gold-embossed pages, tears of deep, overwhelming emotion welling in her dark eyes. "Alessandro... we were living in a small basement apartment two years ago. I took the maid job just to buy her milk."
Alessandro stood up from his chair, walking around the desk, and dropped to one knee before Sophia and his sleeping niece. He reached out, his broad, tattooed hand gently taking Sophia’s hand into his.
"You will never worry about milk or shelter again, Sophia," Alessandro promised, his dark eyes filled with absolute, unyielding devotion. "You are not a maid in this house. You are the mother of the Moretti heiress. You are family."
Sophia looked into his eyes, seeing the deep sincerity, warmth, and protection behind his intimidating reputation. She reached out her other hand, gently resting her fingers over his broad cheek.
"Thank you, Alessandro," Sophia whispered softly. "For protecting us."
Suddenly, the private satellite phone sitting on Alessandro’s desk chimed with a sharp, encrypted ringtone from an untraceable server in Zurich.
Alessandro picked up the device, pressing the receiver to his ear.
A smooth, unfamiliar voice with a heavy European accent spoke through the speaker:
"Mr. Moretti... congratulations on purging the Valenti clan and securing Chicago. But the international board in Zurich has just received notification that Julian's daughter has been identified in your estate... and the European directors are demanding an immediate summit regarding the Atlantic shipping lines."

Alessandro’s dark eyes narrowed into razor-sharp focus. He did not flinch. He slowly looked over at Sophia and little Emma, his broad posture returning to that of an invincible warlord ready to guard his family into eternity.
"Tell Zurich," Alessandro said quietly, his voice sharp as steel, "that if they want to speak to the Moretti family... they can come to Chicago."
