Chapter 5 - The Heir's Forgotten Legacy

The gunfire outside the estate gradually died down into the cold rain as Alessandro’s vanguard security team repelled the Valenti raid, securing the perimeter gates and taking four rival operatives into custody.

By two o'clock in the morning, the mansion was secure again.

Inside the central safe room, the heavy steel door unlocked with a mechanical hiss. Alessandro stepped inside, his navy suit jacket back on, his presence calm, dominant, and unharmed.

Sophia was sitting on a plush leather couch, holding a sleeping Emma in her lap. The three-year-old girl was wrapped in a fleece blanket, her small fingers still clutching her yellow paintbrush.

Sophia looked up, her tear-filled eyes wide with profound relief as she saw Alessandro standing in the doorway.

"You're safe," Sophia whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.

"The perimeter is clear," Alessandro replied, stepping into the room and sitting beside her on the couch. He looked down at the sleeping child, gently brushing a stray curl of brown hair from her forehead.

Alessandro pulled the silver crucifix key from his pocket, laying it flat on the mahogany coffee table before Sophia.

"Do you know what this is, Sophia?" Alessandro asked quietly.

Sophia looked at the silver cross, her brow furrowing in confusion. "It's Vincent's crucifix. He wore it every day."

"This key opens a private safety deposit vault at the Swiss Union Bank downtown," Alessandro revealed, his dark eyes fixing onto her face. "The vault was registered four years ago under the name of my late younger brother, Julian Moretti."

Sophia froze. The breath locked in her throat, her fair skin draining of all color as she stared at the silver metal.

"Julian..." Sophia stammered, her voice shaking violently. "My late husband... worked as Julian's personal driver."

Alessandro leaned closer, his broad frame radiating an intense, quiet focus. "Four years ago, Julian and your husband died in a sudden car explosion on the interstate. The police ruled it an accidental brake failure. But the records inside Vincent's drive show that Vincent sabotaged the car."

Tears spilled over Sophia's cheeks as four years of buried grief and pain broke open. "Why? Why would Vincent kill my husband?"

"Vincent didn't want to kill your husband, Sophia," Alessandro revealed softly, taking her hands into his broad palms. "He wanted to kill Julian. Because Julian had just rewritten the Moretti bloodline trust—naming your unborn child as the sole legal beneficiary of thirty percent of our shipping foundation."

Sophia gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she looked down at three-year-old Emma sleeping peacefully in her lap.

"Emma isn't just a housekeeper's daughter, Sophia," Alessandro whispered, his gravelly voice filled with profound warmth and fierce pride. "She is my brother's child. She is a Moretti."
