Chapter 16 - EVELYN COMES BACK TO NEW YORK

Evelyn moved back to New York when Lily was six.

Not to Morello House.

An apartment twenty minutes away.

By then her parenting time had expanded substantially.

School pickups.

Weeknight dinners.

Alternate weekends.

Vacations.

Lily moved between homes with a purple backpack that contained almost nothing because both houses finally learned to own toothbrushes.

Evelyn resumed foundation work elsewhere, not at Morello Foundation.

She joined an urban arts nonprofit.

No battle for her old office.

Then our marriage.

Still legally intact.

The lawyers eventually asked whether we wanted divorce papers.

We postponed.

Then postponed again.

Not because of family image.

Because we had started seeing each other outside parenting exchanges.

Coffee.

Orchard House.

A museum.

One evening she came to Morello House after Lily fell asleep during a school event.

First time inside since leaving.

She stood in the foyer.

“Feels smaller.”

“It isn’t.”

“Maybe I’m less scared of it.”

That hurt.

“Were you scared here?”

“Of the house? No.”

“Of what?”

“Becoming part of it.”

There.

Then she walked past the dining room.

No place cards.

Professional staff.

Lucinda’s old Stewardship office now divided into a family-administration room and estate-management office.

She noticed.

“You actually did it.”

“Too late.”

“Still did it.”

Then the pantry.

She stopped.

I had moved the letters to a secure archive after copying mine and giving Lily’s to Evelyn for safe keeping.

The pantry stored food again.

Ordinary.

Evelyn opened the door.

“Where?”

I pointed to the upper shelf.

She stared.

Then shut it.

No ceremony.

Some rooms do not deserve more power.

Three months later, Evelyn moved into the guest suite during a snowstorm because roads were dangerous.

Six months later, she stopped pretending the guest suite was where she slept.

We did not announce reconciliation.

We practiced it first.
