Chapter 21 - EVELYN AND I MARRY AGAIN WITHOUT DIVORCING

Technically we never stopped being married.

That made our second wedding ridiculous.

Lily demanded one anyway.

“You never had a reunion wedding.”

“That’s not a thing.”

“It is now.”

Evelyn agreed because she liked tormenting me.

So at fifteen years of marriage, seven years after separation and four after reconciliation, we held a small renewal ceremony in the garden.

No legal effect.

No family council.

No dynastic speeches.

Lily stood with us.

Lucinda attended.

She sat in the second row.

No special chair.

No punishment either.

Then Evelyn read her vows.

“I promise not to let intermediaries speak for me when I have a working telephone.”

Everyone laughed.

My turn:

“I promise not to block your number and forget.”

More laughter.

Humor became possible because responsibility had already been admitted.

Then Lily said:

“You both were idiots.”

Officiant pretended not to hear.

Afterward Lucinda approached Evelyn.

“May I say something?”

Evelyn considered.

“Yes.”

Lucinda said:

“I am sorry I stole time.”

Not letters.

Time.

That was the right noun.

Evelyn’s face changed.

Then:

“I accept that you are sorry.”

Not forgiveness language.

Good.

Lucinda nodded.

May you like

No hug.

Enough.
