Chapter 18 - The Full Truth About Sabine

Sabine eventually admitted when the lie changed from fear into deliberate control.

During the first week, she genuinely believed a careful reunion should be planned.

By the third week, she knew professionals—not she—should make that plan.

By the second month, she knew she was lying because she feared losing me.

By the fourth month, she started resenting Marianne for surviving.

Not wishing she had died.

Resenting the survival itself as something that threatened Sabine’s future.

By the sixth month, Sabine had convinced herself she had earned my life.

She had stayed through grief.

Helped raise Melusine.

Supported my work.

Loved me.

Therefore:

Marianne’s return should not automatically erase Sabine’s place.

That feeling was human.

Her response was not.

She could have told me and allowed me to choose.

She did not.

She could have told Marianne honestly:

Rainier does not know.

She did not.

She could have stepped away.

She did not.

Instead she kept trying to make the wedding happen before truth arrived.

That was why the phrase:

“She was never supposed to come back”

was so revealing.

Sabine did not mean Marianne should have stayed physically lost forever.

She meant Marianne should not have returned in time to force everyone else to choose before Sabine secured the future she wanted.

The tragedy was that Sabine never allowed us to discover whether there was any humane way through the truth.

She made the choice for everyone.

That was her deepest betrayal.
