Chapter 24 - I Stop Being the Gatekeeper

Marianne’s disappearance changed how I ran my own life.

For years, assistants screened almost everything.

Calls.

Letters.

Unexpected visitors.

Claims about Marianne.

After she returned, I reviewed the system.

No more single-person control over family emergencies.

Any verified law-enforcement, hospital, legal, or social-service contact involving immediate family required documented escalation to two executives plus counsel.

No romantic partner could become informal filter.

Redundancy.

Audit trail.

Boring words.

Important words.

I had trusted Sabine.

Trust was not the mistake.

Using trust as infrastructure was.

People fail.

Systems should anticipate that.

We also trained staff that false alarms were not personal failures.

A future caller might still be wrong.

But verified information should have multiple pathways.

One assistant apologized to Marianne repeatedly for transferring her call to security.

She stopped him.

“You did what your policy told you.”

He cried anyway.

Marianne hugged him.

Then told me:

May you like

“Fix policy.”

We did.
