Chapter 20 - The Dress Is Repaired

Melusine kept asking about Marianne’s old dress.

“Can fix?”

A textile conservator examined it.

The shoulder tear was severe but repairable.

Not invisible.

Repairable.

The conservator explained:

“I can stabilize the fibers and support the damaged area. You’ll still be able to see where it tore.”

Melusine frowned.

“Why not make new?”

“Because then it wouldn’t be the same old dress.”

That answer satisfied her.

Six weeks later, the dress returned.

A sheer support layer sat beneath the torn section.

Tiny stitches held the original fabric.

The damage remained visible if you looked closely.

Melusine wore it at home for seven minutes.

Then complained:

“Itchy.”

Marianne laughed.

“It was always itchy.”

Melusine changed into pajamas.

The dress went into an archival box.

Not a shrine.

Not evidence.

A dress.

At eight, Melusine used it for a school family-history project.

She explained:

“My mom wore it before me. Then I wore it. It ripped. A lady fixed it.”

A classmate asked:

“How ripped?”

Melusine shrugged.

“A bad day.”

That was all.

Her trauma did not become classroom entertainment.
