Chapter 5 - Jane

Marianne woke without a name.

That sounds theatrical.

The medical notes were less dramatic.

Disorientation.

Post-traumatic amnesia.

Impaired autobiographical recall.

Language retrieval problems.

Memory fragmentation.

She could identify objects before she could identify herself.

Cup.

Window.

Door.

Pain.

Nurse.

She knew the word baby before she knew Melusine’s name.

For months, staff recorded that she repeatedly said:

“Lulu.”

No one knew what it meant.

Lulu had been Marianne’s private nickname for Melusine.

I had forgotten because she rarely used it around other people.

Marianne remembered:

Rain.

A blue room.

A man wearing a dark watch.

A baby crying.

A song.

The smell of cedar.

Not enough to find us.

She moved from trauma care into neurorehabilitation.

Then a residential program.

A temporary guardian initially made medical decisions while she lacked capacity.

As she improved, the guardianship narrowed.

Then ended.

She was not imprisoned.

She was not hidden by doctors.

She remained because she had no verified identity and no safe home to return to.

She relearned walking.

Used a walker.

Then a cane.

Recovered reading faster than writing.

Could hold a conversation before she could organize long timelines.

At one point a therapist asked:

“Do you think you were married?”

Marianne answered:

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“I miss someone.”

Not evidence.

But memory often returns first as emotion.

Two years after the crash, she remembered my first name.

Rainier.

Unusual enough to search.

A rehabilitation social worker searched combinations of:

Rainier.

Missing wife.

Baby.

Melusine.

The old news coverage appeared.

My photograph.

Melusine in my arms.

Marianne stared at the image.

Then collapsed into tears.

Police became involved.

Medical records were obtained.

Old dental imaging.

A childhood surgery scar.

Prior radiology.

Family photographs.

People who had known her.

Identity was confirmed.

May you like

Marianne Vale was alive.

And I still did not know.
