Chapter 23 - The First Time Marianne Was Late

One evening Marianne was thirty-five minutes late picking Melusine up from dance class.
Traffic accident.
Phone battery dead.
Nothing serious.
Melusine panicked.
By twenty minutes she was crying.
“She disappeared.”
I crouched.
“She’s late.”
“Same.”
“No.”
“Same!”
Trauma does not argue logically.
Marianne arrived breathless.
Saw Melusine.
Stopped.
Did not say:
Don’t be silly.
Did not say:
It was only traffic.
She sat on the floor.
“I’m sorry.”
“You disappeared.”
“I was late and couldn’t call.”
“You promised.”
“I promised I would do everything I could to tell you. My phone died. Next time I’ll keep a charger in the car.”
Melusine cried harder.
Then climbed into her lap.
Marianne held her.
The next day she bought two car chargers.
