Chapter 1 - the forgotten crest

The grand ballroom of the Serrano estate gleamed under the radiant glow of massive crystal chandeliers. Bright cinematic video colors illuminated the lavish diamond gala, reflecting off polished marble floors, sparkling champagne flutes, and the extravagant gowns of high-society guests. Soft orchestral music filled the warm air, masking the cold ambition whispering through the crowds.

Among the bustling staff walked thirty-two-year-old Claire Bennett. Beautiful, graceful, and quiet, Claire moved with gentle dignity despite her simple status. She wore a classic black-and-white maid uniform, a crisp white apron, and practical black flats. Beneath her left fabric glove, pressed tightly against her fair, rosy skin, lay an old silver signet ring—a secret she kept hidden from the world.

As Claire carried a silver tray of crystal champagne flutes through the crowded room, she accidentally brushed against forty-one-year-old Vivienne Serrano.

Vivienne, Dominic’s glamorous cousin, was elegant, arrogant, calculating, and vicious. She wore a luxurious crimson evening gown that swept across the marble floor, complemented by blinding diamond earrings, a matching bracelet, and designer heels. Her fair skin framed a sharp, beautiful face twisted in permanent disdain.

Without hesitation, Vivienne raised her manicured hand and struck the silver tray, sending crystal flutes shattering across the marble floor in a loud cascade of glass. Before Claire could even gasp, Vivienne snatched her own full champagne glass and poured the bubbly liquid directly over Claire’s white apron and black uniform.

The surrounding guests broke into cruel, muffled laughter.

"Servants should stay invisible," Vivienne smirked viciously, looking down her nose at the soaked maid.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

Through the entrance walked Dominic Serrano. Legendary and immensely powerful, the fearsome Mafia boss commanded total, breathless silence wherever he stepped. Muscular, rugged, battle-hardened, deeply masculine, and frighteningly calm, Dominic moved with unquestioned authority. His fair, rosy skin framed a sharply chiselled jaw, and his dark hair was neatly styled. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes.

Dominic’s sharp eyes swept across the ballroom. He immediately saw Claire kneeling amidst the shattered glass on the wet floor, her head lowered in quiet endurance. With deliberate, heavy strides, Dominic walked straight toward her while Vivienne watched arrogantly, fanning herself with a smug smile.

Dominic cowered over no man, yet he stopped beside the fallen maid, reaching down with his broad, calloused hand to help Claire stand. As he lifted her gently by the forearm, Claire’s wet fabric glove caught on the edge of her silver tray and slipped off completely.

Exposed in the warm chandelier light was an antique silver signet ring bearing a deeply carved crest—the ancient emblem of the mansion’s original founding family.

Dominic froze. His dark eyes locked onto the ring, his rugged face turning to stone.

"Where did you get that ring?" Dominic asked, stunned.

Before Claire could answer, Vivienne’s eyes flashed with sudden, desperate fury. She lunged forward, her diamond bracelet sparkling as her hands clawed for Claire’s exposed wrist to snatch the ring.

Dominic moved with terrifying speed. He blocked Vivienne’s arm in mid-air and delivered one powerful, open-handed slap across Vivienne’s face.

The heavy impact echoed off the high ceilings like a pistol shot. Vivienne spun sideways, her crimson gown swirling as she crashed violently into a velvet banquet chair, her styled hair falling in disarray across her shocked, flushed face.

The entire ballroom went deathly silent.

Claire, trembling softly, turned her eyes upward toward the towering ten-foot family portrait hanging above the main fireplace—a portrait of a majestic, fair-skinned woman wearing the exact same signet ring on her finger.

"The woman in that portrait was my mother," Claire said, her voice shaking with quiet emotion.

Dominic slowly turned his head, his dark eyes shifting from Claire’s tearful face to Vivienne, who sat frozen in the velvet chair.

"Then this mansion belongs to her," Dominic said, his voice ice-cold.

Vivienne’s face instantly drained of all color, her lips trembling in sheer horror as a heavy silver key slipped from the frame of the portrait above, landing with a loud clink on the marble floor at Dominic's feet.
