Chapter 8 - the double crest
Two days later, inside a high-end luxury hotel suite overlooking the misty streets of London, Dominic and Claire reviewed satellite blueprints of the historic Moretti vault facility.
Claire wore an elegant dark blue dress, her hair neatly styled, while Dominic wore a custom midnight-blue suit with a dark dress shirt and polished shoes.
"The Moretti facility is built like a fortress," Claire noted, tracing her finger along the digital floor plan on the tablet screen. "How do we get inside without triggering the alarm system?"
Dominic pulled a small velvet box from his suit pocket, opening it to reveal the silver signet ring alongside her mother's crescent pendant.
"When these two pieces are brought within three inches of each other," Dominic explained, "the internal magnetic alignment unlocks the hidden master key housed inside the ring."
Dominic placed the pendant against the signet ring.
CLICK!
A hidden spring inside the silver ring engaged, causing a thin, three-pronged steel key to extend from the base of the crest.
"It's an antique mechanical override key," Claire gasped in wonder. "It doesn't use digital codes at all!"
"Exactly," Dominic smiled faintly. "Old-world engineering for an old-world dynasty."
That evening, under cover of heavy London fog, Dominic and Claire accessed the private vault room beneath the historic financial district.
Claire stepped up to the master safe door, inserting the three-pronged key into the central keyhole and turning it three times clockwise.
CLANG! PNEUMATIC HISS!
The heavy vault door swung open, revealing a velvet-lined chamber containing the original master ledger bound in dark leather, along with three iron trunks filled with rare historic gold bullion.

Dominic picked up the master ledger, opening the first page.
Inside lay handwritten entries detailing every transaction made by the Serrano-Bennett dynasty over the past fifty years—including a final entry written by Claire's late father that revealed the existence of a sixteenth subterranean vault chamber hidden back at the main mansion in America.
