Chapter 26 - Hannah walks back into a gym

Two years after the assault, Hannah asked me to accompany her somewhere.
A community martial-arts center.
Not Ironclad.
She had started basic jiu-jitsu classes.

“Why?”
“Because I want to.”
“Self-defense?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“It’s fun.”
That answer made me happier than:

Trauma should not get ownership over every new interest.
I watched from a bench.
She struggled with a technique.
Tapped.
Laughed.
Tried again.
I did not coach.

Fifteen years training Marines.
My own daughter using terrible hip position.

I remained silent.
Heroic restraint.
