Chapter 9 - Where is Hannah’s laptop?

I asked Brent directly.

“My daughter has personal property in Dustin’s locker.”

Dustin said:

“No, she doesn’t.”

I looked at him.

Brent said:

“What property?”

“Silver laptop. Asset sticker HMC-14.”

Dustin laughed.

“She gave that to me.”

“No.”

“You got paperwork?”

“I have the purchase receipt.”

That shut him up for half a second.

Then Brent said:

“Nobody opens lockers without procedure.”

“Good.”

He seemed surprised.

I continued:

“Preserve it. Police will contact you.”

The word police changed the room.

Not Dustin.

Brent.

His face tightened.

Just slightly.

I had spent fifteen years training people to watch hands.

Another twenty learning to watch faces.

Brent was not afraid of Hannah’s laptop as property.

He was afraid of what was on it.
