I did not secretly decide to retrieve evidence from a suspected abuser.
Before leaving the hospital, I spoke to Detective Maria Jensen.

“Dustin’s equipment locker.”
“Whose locker legally?”
“The gym’s, assigned to him.”
“Do you have access?”

She said:
“Do not break into anything.”

“I smiled.
She did not.
“Mr. Miller.”
“I heard you.”
She arranged for another officer to begin preparing the appropriate preservation process.
My purpose was simple:
Tell the gym not to destroy or release Hannah’s property.
And determine whether it was still there.
