Chapter 8 - The fighter who recognized me

His name was Cody Ames.

Twenty-four.

Welterweight.

He walked toward me cautiously.

“Sergeant Miller?”

“Retired.”

“My uncle trained at Camp Lejeune. Staff Sergeant Ames.”

I remembered the surname.

“Derek Ames?”

Cody’s face changed.

“Yes, sir.”

“Good instructor.”

“You remember him?”

“He broke my nose during demonstrations.”

Cody laughed nervously.

Then nobody laughed.

Dustin looked around.

“You guys serious?”

Cody said:

“He ran instructor certification before my uncle did.”

Dustin rolled his eyes.

“Great. Grandpa knows karate.”

I answered:

“Mostly how not to get into stupid fights.”

Brent stepped between us.

“That sounds like good advice.”

“Then tell Dustin to stop walking toward me.”

Dustin stopped.

Interesting.
