Chapter 4 - The Velvet Envelope

Nadine stepped onto the terrace, her heavy beaded gown rustling loudly against the stone. The two security guards behind her looked visibly uncomfortable, their eyes darting toward Elliot's broad shoulders as if calculating how quickly they would be broken if a fight broke out.

"Call off the federal freeze, Elliot," Nadine demanded, her voice rising into a sharp, hysterical pitch. "I have contacts in the Governor's office! I can have your medical license revoked across the entire country by tomorrow morning!"

Elliot didn't even flinch. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick, sealed manila envelope, and tossed it casually onto the glass coffee table in front of her.

"Open it," Elliot said quietly.

Nadine hesitated, her manicured hand shaking as she reached down and picked up the heavy envelope. She tore open the top seal, pulling out a stack of financial ledgers and medical archive reports stamped with a official government seal.

As her eyes scanned the top page, her breath hitched violently in her throat.

"This... this is impossible," Nadine whispered, her face turning as pale as white chalk. "These records were destroyed in the fire at the research clinic!"

"Digital backups exist, Nadine," Clara said, walking up to stand beside Elliot, her dark eyes filled with absolute contempt. "My father was a brilliant engineer. He built a secondary server node beneath the foundation's main facility. He knew your son was falsifying clinical trial data to inflate the company's stock value."

"And when your son realized my father was going to expose the fraud," Clara continued, her voice sharp as steel, "you helped him stage my father's medical emergency."

Nadine backed up a step, her heels clicking nervously against the stone. "You have no proof I signed those orders! I was in Europe when your father passed away!"

"Page four," Elliot interjected coldly. "Your electronic signature is stamped on the transfer clearance for the experimental sedative. The exact same sedative that was found in your son's bloodstream the night he crashed his car."

Nadine dropped the papers onto the floor, her hands covering her mouth as tears of pure terror finally spilled over her rosy cheeks. The arrogant matriarch who had controlled high society for thirty years was entirely unraveling.

"You... you killed my son?" Nadine gasped out, staring at Elliot with wide, horrified eyes.

"Your son killed himself when he drove one hundred miles an hour down a mountain road trying to escape a federal indictment," Elliot stated flatly. "I was just the physician who refused to falsify his autopsy report."

Norah stirred softly on the sofa, letting out a small sigh as she snuggled deeper into her plush bear.

Elliot looked down at his daughter, then back at Nadine. "You have ten minutes to clear your personal items from the estate, Nadine. After that, federal marshals will execute the asset seizure warrant on your penthouse."

Nadine looked at the two security guards beside her, but both men turned their heads away, refusing to meet her gaze. Her empire had evaporated in less than an hour.

Without another word, Nadine turned and stumbled out of the terrace doors, her beaded gown dragging through the discarded papers on the floor.

Clara looked up at Elliot, her hand reaching out to touch his arm. "Is it really over?"

Elliot turned his icy blue eyes to hers, his expression darkening slightly. "Not yet, Clara. Look at the bottom page of that file."
