Chapter 8 - The Mirror of Betrayal

Elliot’s jaw set like iron. He didn't hesitate; his fingers flew across the keyboard, entering an executive decryption code to access the locked file mentioned in the video recording.
Clara stood beside him, her hand gripping his arm tightly as a heavy PDF document opened on the screen.
The document was titled: PROJECT HYDRA - SECONDARY BENEFICIARY CODICIL.
As Clara scanned the legal text, her breath hitched violently in her throat.
"This... this can't be real," Clara stammered, her voice shaking with sudden terror. "Richard had a twin brother?"
Elliot’s icy blue eyes narrowed as he read the lines of text.
The document revealed that four years ago, Nadine hadn't just given birth to one son—she had given birth to fraternal twins in a private clinic in Zurich. While Richard had been raised in New York as the public heir to the family fortune, his identical twin brother, Julian, had been raised in secret in Europe, managing the family's shadow accounts.
And according to the codicil signed thirty days ago, if Richard died and Nadine was legally incapacitated, full legal guardianship of any bloodline heirs automatically reverted to Julian.
"She kept a second son hidden for thirty years?" Clara gasped out, her fair skin turning pale. "Why?"
"Insurance," Elliot growled, his deep voice vibrating with absolute rage. "If Richard ever failed or faced federal prosecution, Julian was her backup plan to retain control of the foundation's voting shares."
Suddenly, the quiet night outside the manor house was broken by the faint thrum of a helicopter engine approaching from the south over the river.
Elliot walked quickly to the window, pulling back the heavy velvet curtains.
Through the rain-streaked glass, he saw a black, unmarked helicopter hovering low over the estate's lower gardens, its searchlights cutting through the darkness. Three figures dressed in dark tactical gear were rappelling down onto the stone terrace.
"They're coming for Norah," Clara cried out, her protective instincts instantly flaring into wild panic.
Elliot turned around, grabbing Clara by her shoulders and looking directly into her eyes with an unyielding, fierce intensity.
"Listen to me, Clara," Elliot commanded, his voice sharp and steady as iron. "Take Norah into the panic room behind the library bookshelf. Lock the steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."
"Elliot, no! I'm not leaving you!" Clara sobbed.
"You have to protect our daughter, Clara!" Elliot demanded softly, kissing her forehead with desperate warmth. "I built this house to withstand a siege. Go! Now!"

Clara bit her lip, tears streaming down her face, but she nodded. She turned and sprinted down the hallway toward the nursery, scooping sleeping Norah into her arms, and rushed into the library.
Elliot stepped over to his desk, opened the bottom drawer, and pulled out a heavy tactical sidearm and two extra magazines. He racked the slide with a crisp, lethal click, his icy blue eyes fixing onto the study doorway as the heavy oak front doors downstairs were blown off their hinges with a deafening explosion.
