Chapter 5 - The Cold Interception

Clara reached down, picking up the fallen stack of papers from the stone floor. She flipped past the financial ledgers and medical trial records until her fingers reached the final, yellowed document tucked into the back pocket of the manila folder.
It was an international birth registry certificate dated four years ago—stamped with the seal of a private hospital in Zurich.
Clara’s breath caught in her throat as her eyes scanned the lines of text.
CHILD NAME: NORAH CLARA MARSH.
BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: CLARA ELENA VANE.
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: ELLIOT THOMAS MARSH.
LEGAL GUARDIAN DESIGNATION: SOLE CUSTODY ASSIGNED TO MOTHER UPON FATHER'S CONCEALED DEPLOYMENT.
Clara looked up at Elliot, tears welling in her large dark eyes. "You... you registered her birth under your name in Switzerland? Before Nadine even knew I was pregnant?"
"I knew Richard was monitoring your medical records in New York," Elliot explained softly, his voice dropping to a tender, gravelly murmur. "If I had registered her birth in the United States, Nadine’s lawyers would have used Richard's legal marriage to claim immediate joint custody the day she was born."
"So you hid us..." Clara whispered, realization washing over her like a warm wave. "All those months I thought you had abandoned me... you were building the legal trap for Nadine."
"I had to make Nadine believe she had complete control," Elliot said, stepping closer and gently cupping Clara's cheek with his large, warm hand. "If she knew I was working with federal investigators, she would have moved the foundation's offshore assets to a non-extradition jurisdiction. I needed her arrogant enough to keep the money right here in the city."
Before Clara could answer, a sudden commotion echoed from the main corridor outside the VIP suite.
The sound of sharp shouting and breaking glass shattered the quiet night air.
Elliot’s posture instantly shifted back to absolute, lethal readiness. He pulled Clara behind his broad frame, his right hand reaching smoothly beneath his tailored charcoal suit jacket to grip the handle of a concealed sidearm.
The double doors of the terrace burst open once again.
Standing in the doorway was not Nadine, but a tall, broad man in a dark tactical jacket, his face shadowed by a low cap. He held a heavy suppressed pistol in his gloved hand.

Behind him, two hotel security guards lay unconscious on the hallway carpet.
"Dr. Marsh," the intruder rasped, his voice rough and distorted through a voice scrambler. "Hand over the silver key, or the girl doesn't leave this hotel alive."
