Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House

The force of the explosion shook the stone foundations of the manor, sending dust cascading from the decorative plaster ceilings.
Inside the library, Clara slammed the heavy steel door of the concealed panic room shut, engaging the triple deadbolts from the inside. The room was small, reinforced with eight-inch concrete walls, containing emergency supplies, communication monitors, and a live security camera feed of the entire estate.
Clara sat on a leather bench, holding Norah tight against her chest. The four-year-old was wide awake now, clinging to her mother's dress, her wide eyes reflecting the blue light of the security screens.
"Mommy... is Daddy fighting the bad men?" Norah whispered softly.
"Daddy is protecting us, sweetie," Clara murmured, kissing her daughter's hair while keeping her eyes glued to the monitors.
On the main foyer camera feed, four tactical operatives in black gear moved through the smoke with silenced carbines raised.
Suddenly, Elliot appeared on the balcony above the foyer.
Moving with the speed and lethal precision of a seasoned operative, Elliot fired three controlled bursts from his sidearm. The three lead operatives collapsed to the marble floor before they could even level their weapons toward the staircase.
The fourth operative scrambled behind a stone pillar, firing a spray of automatic rounds that shattered the glass chandelier overhead, showering the foyer in crystal fragments.
Elliot ducked behind the solid oak banister, changing magazines in a fluid, single-handed motion. He leaned out and fired two precise shots, neutralizing the remaining gunman.
Silence descended over the foyer once again, heavy and thick with the smell of gunpowder.
Elliot stepped down the grand marble staircase, scanning the fallen intruders. He walked over to the lead operative, kneeling down to remove the man's tactical helmet.
Beneath the visor was a face that took Elliot's breath away.
The man had dark wavy hair, rugged features, and fair rosy skin—a face that was the exact mirror image of Clara's late ex-husband, Richard.
It was Julian.
Julian coughed weakly, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, but a dark, sadistic sneer touched his lips as he looked up at the towering doctor.
"You... you thought you cleaned the slate, Marsh?" Julian rasped out, his voice a distorted echo of his twin brother's. "My mother... planned this... five years ago..."
"Your mother is in a federal holding cell, Julian," Elliot said coldly, pressing the barrel of his sidearm against Julian's forehead. "And your assault on this house ends right now."
May you like
Julian let out a ragged, bloody laugh. "Check... the nursery camera... Doctor."
Elliot’s blood ran cold. He spun around, looking up at the second-floor balcony as a cold realization crashed over him.
