Chapter 1 - the picture in the frame

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was a spectacle of sparkling crystal, towering floral arrangements, and warm amber illumination. High-society elites, corporate titans, and media moguls drifted across the marble floor in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns. Yet, despite the hundred prominent guests in attendance, the entire room seemed to orbit around a single man.
Gabriel Cross stood near the grand glass staircase, holding a crystal glass of sparkling water. Tall, broad-shouldered, ruggedly handsome, and frighteningly controlled, the feared Mafia boss commanded absolute reverence. He wore a perfectly tailored gray suit that emphasized his imposing frame, a crisp white dress shirt with the top button undone, a luxury wristwatch that caught the chandelier light, and polished leather shoes. Thick dark hair framed his sharp jawline, which was dusted with light stubble, and his dark eyes swept the room with an intimidating, razor-sharp focus.
Beside him stood Serena Vale. A famous fashion model with long blonde hair and sharp blue eyes, Serena looked breathtaking in a sparkling gold evening gown adorned with expensive diamond jewelry. She leaned against Gabriel’s arm, projecting a polished, confident smile to the press photographers gathered near the entrance.
Then, the heavy brass doors of the ballroom swung open.
Claire Bennett stepped inside, and the ambient noise of the room seemed to drop an octave.
Beautiful, elegant, emotionally strong, and quietly guarded, Gabriel’s ex-wife looked stunning in a sophisticated champagne-colored evening gown. Delicate diamond earrings and a matching necklace caught the light, setting off her long chestnut-brown hair. But what captured every eyes in the ballroom was not just her beauty—it was the three little boys walking beside her.
Five-year-old Ethan, Noah, and Lucas Cross walked in single file, holding hands. All three boys wore matching tan three-piece suits with neat gold bow ties and polished shoes. They had dark brown hair, fair, rosy skin, and facial features that were unmistakable.
Gabriel’s eyes locked onto the entrance. His hand froze around his glass as he took in the sight of the three children. Every line of their faces, the shape of their jaws, and the intense dark shade of their eyes were a perfect, miniature mirror image of himself.
Ethan, the most curious and outspoken of the triplets, looked up from the polished floor. His dark eyes traveled past the crowd until they landed directly on Gabriel.
Ethan tugged gently on Claire’s hand. Behind Gabriel, Serena’s polished smile faltered, her face visibly unsettling as she stepped back.
"Mom, that’s the man in the picture," Ethan spoke innocently, his bright voice echoing softly in the quiet hall.
Gabriel moved before his mind could fully process the moment. He walked across the marble floor with slow, deliberate steps, unable to tear his gaze away from the three boys. As he approached, Noah and Lucas instinctively stepped closer to their mother, while Ethan stood his ground, observing his father with open curiosity.
Gabriel stopped two feet away from Claire. The air between them crackled with five years of buried grief, unspoken words, and intense emotion.
"How old are they?" Gabriel asked, his voice stunned and thick with suppressed shock.
Claire met Gabriel’s dark eyes without backing away or flinching.
"Five," Claire answered quietly.
Gabriel looked down from one boy to the next—Ethan’s brave posture, Noah’s quiet watchfulness, Lucas’s sweet, cautious gaze. He did the math in his head instantly. Five years. Exactly nine months after the violent, chaotic night he had sent Claire away to protect her from a syndicate war.
Gabriel’s face went deathly pale. His controlled demeanor shattered into raw, trembling disbelief.
"Claire… are they mine?" Gabriel asked, his voice low and shaken.
Claire placed one protective hand over Lucas’s shoulder, looking directly into Gabriel’s eyes with absolute, unyielding truth.

"They’re yours."
A sharp shatter echoed across the marble floor as Serena dropped her champagne glass, the sparkling crystal smashing into a thousand pieces at her feet.
