Chapter 5 - the penthouse stand

By midnight, the rain lashing against the penthouse windows had turned into a fierce thunderstorm. Lightning illuminated the Manhattan skyline in sudden, brilliant flashes.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse master bedroom, Ethan, Noah, and Lucas were fast asleep on the massive king-sized bed, tucked safely under plush down comforters.

In the adjoining living area, Claire sat on a velvet sofa near the fireplace, holding a mug of warm tea. She had removed her high heels, her long chestnut hair resting loosely over her champagne gown.

Gabriel walked into the room, having removed his gray suit jacket and tie. He wore only his crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his broad forearms, exposing the dark, intricate ink of his tattoos. He sat down on the leather ottoman across from her, his long legs stretched toward the fire.

"The boys are incredible, Claire," Gabriel said softly, his dark eyes softening as he looked toward the bedroom door. "You did an extraordinary job raising them."

"It wasn't easy, Gabriel," Claire admitted, looking into her tea. "There were nights in Maine when I didn't know how I was going to pay the heating bill. I refused to touch the money your advisor tried to buy me off with."

Gabriel felt an agonizing tightness in his chest. "I would have given you the world, Claire. Every dollar I earned, every piece of territory I took... it was all supposed to be for you."

Claire looked up, her brown eyes meeting his in the warm firelight. "You pushed me away first, Gabriel. Five years ago, before Arthur ever came to my hospital room, you were becoming distant, ruthless, cold... you chose your syndicate over our marriage."

Gabriel leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, looking directly into her eyes with intense, raw honesty. "I became cold because three of my top lieutenants were assassinated in one week. I knew a mole was inside my inner circle, and I was terrified that if I showed affection to you in public, my enemies would target you to break me."

Claire’s breath hitched. "You were trying to protect me?"

"I was trying to keep you alive," Gabriel whispered, reaching out to gently touch her hand. "But I failed... because the real snake was sitting right beside me at my council table."

Suddenly, the penthouse emergency lights flashed red.

The heavy reinforced doors of the suite hissed as Marcus’s voice came urgently through the intercom speaker.

"Boss! We have a breach on the private elevator line! Arthur Vale’s rogue security team just overrode the basement controls! They are coming up!"
