Chapter 2

The deliberate exclusion hung heavily in the air, a cruel, calculated insult that Charles Whitmore executed with practiced ease. Madison, Lauren, and Emily preened under the golden chandelier light, completely ignoring their older half-sister. For years, Claire had endured this quiet erasure. She was the ghost in the machine, the tireless intellect working in the shadows while her father and sisters paraded in the spotlight. But tonight, the sheer audacity of Charles claiming his other three daughters were the sole future of the company struck a nerve that had been raw for too long.
Claire took a slow, steadying breath. Her chest rose and fell beneath the pale blue fabric of her dress. She slowly raised her eyes, her natural micro-expressions conveying a heartbreaking mix of profound humiliation and quiet, desperate bravery.
"Dad..." Claire’s voice was soft, but it cut through the low hum of the ballroom orchestra. She took a half-step forward, forcing herself into the peripheral vision of the powerful men. "You forgot me."
Madison let out a soft, mocking scoff, rolling her eyes toward Lauren, who smirked into her champagne glass. Emily simply turned her head away, bored by the interruption.
Charles stiffened, his confident smile fracturing for a fraction of a second. He turned his head slowly, looking dismissively at Claire as if she were a servant who had dropped a tray. The arrogance in his eyes was absolute.
"Claire only handles household matters," Charles stated flatly, his voice dripping with condescension. He didn't even fully turn his body toward her, immediately shifting his attention back to the imposing billionaire standing before him. "As I was saying, Dominic, Madison oversees our public relations, and Lauren handles—"
"Is that so?" Dominic interrupted.
His deep, resonant voice was barely above a murmur, but it carried a chilling authority that instantly silenced Charles. Dominic slowly turned his large, muscular frame toward Claire. He didn't look at her with pity; he looked at her with the sharp, dissecting gaze of a predator evaluating a highly valuable asset. He studied the tension in her shoulders, the intelligence burning behind her hurt eyes, and the modest elegance of her pale blue dress.
Then, Dominic slowly turned his head to look directly at Charles. His expression was a mask of cold, restrained danger.
"Then who saved your company?" Dominic asked.
The question hit the marble foyer like a physical blow. The music from the string quartet seemed to fade into the background. Madison’s confident smile faltered, her red sequined gown suddenly feeling far too tight. Lauren and Emily exchanged rapid, nervous glances, the color draining from their fair, rosy skin.
Charles blinked, his neatly combed gray hair practically bristling with sudden, unadulterated panic. "I... I beg your pardon, Mr. Vale? The board and I navigated the recent restructuring—"
"Do not insult my intelligence, Charles," Dominic said, his voice dropping an octave, the lethal edge of the mafia boss bleeding through the refined billionaire facade. "I do not invest my money without knowing exactly whose hands are on the steering wheel."
Claire stood frozen at the end of the line. She slowly looked up at Dominic, her breath hitching in her throat. Disbelief washed over her features. For three years, she had worked under shell accounts and proxy names, fixing her father’s disastrous financial blunders to keep the family out of bankruptcy. No one was supposed to know.

Dominic stepped closer to Charles, looking directly into the older man’s eyes with a calm, chilling expression.
"Charles," Dominic said softly, his gaze flicking briefly to the woman in the pale blue dress. "Her signature is on every rescue deal."
