Chapter 5

Panic, cold and sharp, seized Charles Whitmore. The charcoal suit felt like a straightjacket. Without Dominic Vale’s capital injection, the aggressive short-term loans Charles had secretly taken out to fund Madison, Lauren, and Emily’s lavish lifestyles would default by Friday. The mansion, the cars, the status—it would all evaporate.
"Renegotiated?" Charles choked out, his arrogance entirely shattered. "What terms? I will give you an extra five percent equity. Ten percent! I’ll put Madison on your advisory board!"
Dominic let out a dark, humorless chuckle. "I do not want your equity, Charles. And I certainly do not want your spoiled daughter anywhere near my operations."
He turned back to Claire. The pale blue of her dress seemed to glow faintly in the warm light, a stark contrast to the dark, dangerous energy radiating from the mafia boss.
"I want her," Dominic stated.
The silence returned, heavier this time. Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked at Dominic, searching his fair, handsome face for the trap. "You want me?"
"I want the mind that outmaneuvered three international banking conglomerates," Dominic clarified, his voice dropping into a smooth, hypnotic cadence. "I want the woman who structured a shadow-liquidity pool without triggering a single SEC alarm. You are suffocating in this house, Claire. You are a genius playing maid to a court of fools."
Madison’s face flushed a furious, ugly red. "She’s a nobody! You can’t just—"
"Madison," Charles snapped, turning on his favored daughter with a sudden, vicious panic. "Shut your mouth!"
Dominic ignored the outburst, stepping closer to Claire. He lowered his head slightly, his dark wavy hair catching the light. "I am proposing a new partnership. Not with Whitmore Enterprises. With you, Claire. I will provide the capital, the infrastructure, and the protection. You will provide the strategy."
"And my father's company?" Claire asked, her natural micro-expressions showing a fierce, analytical mind calculating the variables at lightning speed.
"Your father's company is currently bleeding out," Dominic said coldly, not bothering to lower his voice. "I will buy the debt. All of it. I will become the sole creditor of Whitmore Enterprises. And I will immediately transfer the voting rights of that debt to you."
Charles staggered back, gripping the marble banister of the elegant staircase to keep from collapsing. "You... you can't do that! That would give her total control over the board! I am the CEO!"
"You will be a figurehead reporting to a desk in the basement if she allows you to keep a job at all," Dominic corrected ruthlessly. "That is the deal, Charles. I buy the debt, I hand the leash to Claire, or I walk out that door right now, and by Monday morning, my associates in the underworld will begin collecting the markers you owe them."
The mention of the underworld drained the last drop of blood from Charles’s face. He knew Dominic Vale was not just a billionaire; he was a man who ordered executions as easily as he ordered coffee.
Claire looked at her father. The man who had ignored her, hidden her, and humiliated her for thirty years was now trembling, entirely at her mercy. She looked at Madison, Lauren, and Emily, who were clinging to each other in sheer terror, their glamorous gowns suddenly looking like costumes on frightened children.

Then, Claire looked up at Dominic. The dark, heavily tattooed mafia boss was offering her the world on a silver platter, asking for nothing but her brilliance in return.
"Do you accept my terms, Claire?" Dominic asked softly.
