Chapter 6

Claire Whitmore stood perfectly still. The delicate earrings she wore swayed slightly as she took a deep, steadying breath. For her entire life, she had played by the rules of a rigged game. She had been the dutiful, unseen daughter, swallowing her pride to keep the Whitmore name from being dragged through the mud. But staring into Dominic Vale’s piercing eyes, she realized the truth: the legacy wasn't worth saving if it meant drowning herself.

"If I take control of the voting rights," Claire began, her voice gaining a strength that made her father flinch, "I will not just be an advisor. I will restructure the executive board by Friday. The redundancies will be eliminated."

She didn't look at her half-sisters, but Madison, Lauren, and Emily knew exactly what 'redundancies' meant. Their vanity titles and exorbitant salaries would be the first things cut.

"No!" Emily shrieked, stepping forward, the white satin of her gown shimmering. "Dad, you can't let her do this! She hates us! She’s going to take everything!"

"Silence," Dominic commanded. The single word was laced with such dark, immediate threat that Emily snapped her mouth shut, tears instantly welling in her eyes. Dominic kept his gaze entirely on Claire, a faint, impressed smile touching his lips. "You will have absolute autonomy, Claire. My capital is your weapon. How you wield it is your business."

Charles pushed himself off the banister, his neatly combed gray hair now slightly disheveled. He tried to muster the last remnants of his patriarchal authority, puffing out his chest under his charcoal suit.

"Claire, listen to me," Charles said, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and desperate pleading. "You don't know what you are doing. This man is dangerous. He is a criminal. You cannot align yourself with the mafia! You are a Whitmore!"

Claire finally turned to fully face her father. The modesty of her pale blue dress belied the steel that had suddenly forged in her spine.

"I have spent my entire adult life cleaning up the messes of a legitimate businessman, Dad," Claire said, her voice icy and precise. "And all it earned me was a place at the back of the line while you took the credit. Mr. Vale might be a criminal, but at least he recognizes the value of my work. At least he sees me."

Dominic’s chest swelled slightly, a surge of dark satisfaction settling in his gut. He had observed her for months through financial forensic reports, captivated by the sheer brilliance of the ghost operating the Whitmore accounts. Seeing her now, stepping into her power with quiet, lethal grace, was intoxicating.

"The paperwork, Mr. Vale," Claire said, turning back to Dominic. "Do you have it?"

Dominic reached into his suit jacket and produced a folded legal document, sliding it smoothly from the breast pocket. It was a hostile takeover disguised as a debt-restructuring agreement. "I anticipated you might be tired of the shadows."

He handed her the sleek black fountain pen.

Charles lunged forward. "Claire, don't you dare!"

Before Charles could close the distance, Dominic moved with terrifying, blinding speed. The billionaire mafia boss stepped into Charles’s path, his large hand snapping up to grip Charles by the collar of his expensive charcoal suit, lifting the older man an inch off the polished marble floor.

"If you take another step toward her," Dominic whispered, his face inches from Charles’s terrified, sweating face, "I will have my men drag you into the garden and break both of your legs. Nod if you understand."
