Chapter 4

The power dynamic in the grand foyer had violently inverted. Charles Whitmore, a man used to ruling his empire with an iron fist, was now sweating profusely in his expensive charcoal suit. His three favored daughters—Madison, Lauren, and Emily—stood clustered together, their glamorous gowns suddenly looking ridiculous against the backdrop of an impending corporate execution.

"Mr. Vale, this is an internal family matter," Charles attempted to regain control, his voice laced with forced authority. "I brought you here to discuss a partnership. I will not have my household torn apart in front of my guests."

"Your guests are currently busy drinking your expensive champagne on the other side of that archway," Dominic observed coolly, gesturing vaguely toward the crowded ballroom with his glass. "And I am not tearing your household apart, Charles. I am simply pointing out that the house is built on sand, and the only structural support is the woman you just told me handles 'household matters'."

Dominic turned his attention fully to Claire. He stepped closer to her, invading her personal space just enough to make his towering presence felt, but maintaining a respectful distance. He studied the delicate earrings she wore, the elegant loose bun, the way she held her ground despite the overwhelming tension.

"Tell me, Claire," Dominic said, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Why do you stay? A mind capable of restructuring a billion-dollar logistics network while dodging federal audits could walk into any hedge fund on Wall Street and demand a partnership."

Claire met his gaze. Up close, the danger radiating from Dominic was palpable. The light stubble on his jaw gave him a rugged edge that contrasted sharply with the bespoke tailoring of his black suit.

"He is my father," Claire replied quietly, though there was no warmth in her tone. "When my mother died, he was all I had left. I made a promise to her that I would protect the family legacy."

"A legacy he is actively trying to destroy with his own arrogance," Dominic noted, his voice low enough that only she could hear the full weight of his judgment. "You are protecting a man who would gladly let you drown if it meant he could stand on your shoulders to keep his expensive shoes dry."

Charles, unable to hear the quiet exchange, stepped forward, his desperation making him reckless. "Mr. Vale, I am the CEO of Whitmore Enterprises! My signature is the only one that carries legal weight. If you want this fifty-million-dollar deal, you deal with me!"

Dominic slowly turned his head. The slow, predatory movement of his eyes made the three sisters flinch.

"I am not giving you fifty million dollars, Charles," Dominic stated, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying finality.

Lauren gasped, clutching Emily’s arm. The champagne-gold sequins of her dress caught the light as she trembled. "But... but Dad said the deal was finalized!"

"Your father lies," Dominic replied flatly. "I came here tonight to observe. I wanted to see if the brilliant architect behind the Whitmore recovery was respected, empowered, and in control. Because I do not partner with figureheads. I partner with architects."

Dominic reached into the inner pocket of his black suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, black fountain pen. He held it up, the gold nib catching the chandelier light.

"The deal is dead, Charles," Dominic announced. "Unless, of course, the terms are renegotiated tonight."
